I have heard from a lot of the communication on the Navy for Mom's site discussing how cold it is in the sleeping areas on the ships-are they allowed to have blankets from home?  Are they allowed to…Continue

Anzioombudsman, I'm unable to respond to your message about my question. Is there another way to respond?

Just an FYI . . . I got an envelope in the mail from the photographer who took pictures for the USS ANZIO CRUISEBOOK. The pic of my son that he took was really nice. He has a website with everyone's pictures on it. I ordered the personalized pic with his name/rank, the ship's name and deployment info.

Here's the link:  USS ANZIO CRUISEBOOK Pictures

The photographer is active duty Navy getting ready to retire. He seems like a real nice guy!

Here's his info:  6311 Photography

I have no connection with him, I just like what he's offering and thought I'd share!

ncmadocent- how fun!! My grandfather was from the Ukraine so when my grandmother heard they were there she got very excited. I wish I could have gone there! Fingers crossed that he'll take you ;). My husband's mother is from Puerto Rico, which is where the spanish comes from- the french is from college.

and Your_Anz thanks for the info! I've been bad about checking lately. Wish I was gonna be in town for the meeting!

My SIL also speaks English, Spanish and French.  He's a French citizen, but is Spanish on his mother's side.  He just joined the Anzio a short time before they left and everything I have heard so far is very positive.  Since I am half Ukrainian, I was hoping he would enjoy Ukraine-and he did.  Now maybe when he retires (about 4 years) he'll take me there.  ; )

Jane- so glad she got what she wanted! (And I bet you are excited to have her back in the states!).  My husband is slating for his next tour and we are crossing our fingers for a good billet (he won't leave until February of next year though).  If that's the stuff she lives for it is unfortunate she isn't on Anzio yet- they did a big reception in Ukraine (there are articles about it online, and pictures) where there were all sorts of people like that. I know my husband was giving a tour to the Ukraine Chief of Naval Operations and the American ambassador to the Ukraine- luckily the ambassador could serve as a translator since my husband only speaks English, Spanish, and French and apparently they don't use those languages in Ukraine ;). (The guy did speak Russian though- they could have used your daughter!) It was a great experience for him- there were many other dignitaries there and the list of people he met was unbelievable.  Such wonderful opportunities for them- of course they work so hard to earn them!! My husband isn't much for small talk though, but he's learning how to do it. He jokes that he usually doesn't need to because I talk so much so he's used to just listening ;). That is too bad that she was not able to get a below deck tour. It seems every deployment they go on Anzio has a lot of opportunities like that so I am sure she will have an amazing experience on board!- I know my husband certainly has. Anzio is a great ship and the wardroom is very welcoming, they all care about each other very much- I think she will love it!

Jane- yes it is :) There are only female officers on board, no female enlisted. Right now there are I think 6 females officers- three of those are pilots so they are not usually with the ship.  That is going to change in the future but right now, she will be one of not very many females!!  Welcome aboard!! :)

Had a cool morning. Timing was perfect.  Had an online chat with my Sailor Son from the ship.  The tone in his messages was very positive.  All is good and it made my day.

Crazy flooding on the Missouri River; I expect to see a Navy ship one of these days.  I saw on navy.mil the Anzio was hosting a party tonight for joint exercises.  Pretty cool!

The top one was actually sent in from a retired US navy officer who happened to catch Anzio :) It got sent to the ship and my husband sent it along to me to share with everyone!
And then this one is my husband up on the bridge- couldn't help but show one off ;) :
