My husband is an ET stationed in Great Lakes for ATT & A school. He got his Live Ashore Packet on Monday and he is turning in the CHIT tomorrow. Does anyone with experience on this have any advice as to how long it will take for everything to get approved? Also, I need some moving advice. We have most of our furniture in storage right now. We are going to get the full government move. Whenever it gets closer i will move the rest of my furniture..(bed,comp...etc) into the storage with the rest of the furniture so that it can be moved from one location. What i need to know is.. will they wrap our stuff and pack it for us or do i need to do that myself? I have some Pictures that need to be wrapped in bubble wrap but my husband thinks that they will take care of these type of things for us.. any advice? Since i will be driving my vehicle to Great Lakes, IL from Georgia they will reimburse us for Gas money.. am i correct?Thanks for any bit of advice you guys have to offer. I am very new to all of this and i need all of the help and support that i can get!

For those of you living in Great Lakes, Do you live on base or off? My husband and i will have to live off base because on base housing does not allow Siberian Huskies. If only they knew our baby, shes the sweetest dog in the world! I guess it is because of her size though! I have been looking for apartments and our options are very limited because of the doggie.. but i am looking at

Hi! I'm gonna help you as much as I can, as I went through this not that long ago.
First off, his live-a-shore packet/chit should take maybe a week or two to go through. It really just depends on his ship and how fast things work there and how well behaved all the students are. Sorry to say, but when one student does a bad thing, the whole floor/division/group gets punished. Not fair, but it's how they roll.
As for moving up to Great Lakes, the Navy will NOT pay for your move or move you unless that is your permanent duty station. You will have to move yourself up there. See, once he is done with his schooling, he will get orders to a ship and that is when they will move you from your HOR (home of origin) and then they will pack you. They do a really good job. I only had a couple of things break and it wasn't a big deal; plates and a bowl. Everything arrived in great condition.
They won't give you gas money or anything. I'm sorry! You'll be moving totally on your own. It's not easy. I did that, but I left everything at my house, took what I needed and stayed in an extended stay hotel. It's hard to do, but it can be done!

I think ET school is longer than 3 months, right? If it's longer than 90 days, military housing will give you a home. :) I had a friend living in military housing and she loved it. My husband was there for MM school and it was 89 days...1 day short of being able to get military housing! LOL Seems since your husband is and ET, his schooling is a lot longer and he might get the full government move. My husband got stationed out in San Diego on the USS Bonhomme Richard, but after being on the ship for a few months, he got hurt pretty badly falling down about 25 stairs in one of the ladder wells. Amongst some other pretty bad issues with the people he worked with (his superiors were belittling him and trying to force him to divorce me), he got suicidal on top of getting hurt. Long story short, the CO of the ship felt that it was in his best interest to get discharged. It was honorable, at least! It kinda came as a shock though.
Anyways, so we're not in the Navy anymore, but we still live in San Diego and I'm still friends with LOTS of military wives. I miss the life! It was a hard one, but still good! :)

ONLY if his school is longer than 3 months though. They would NOT pay for my move, we paid every single penny. But if his school is longer than 3 months, then yes, they might pay, but it really isn't promised...that is what the people in my husbands "ship" said there at Great Lakes when we were there back in December.
The chit could take a few weeks to a month to get approved. IF you where married prior to him going to bootcamp, the USN will pay to move you. If you want the USN to move you they will not take responsibility for anything that is already boxed up or wrapped up.
Come check out these groups....I am sure there are wifes who are going though what you have gone though. The AECF group is filled with people who have loved ones in the same school as your husband.
I don't have much advice, but I'm just curious about something and thought Mrs.B and or Angie could give me some insight! I just moved to GL, on my own. My husband is an IC and got his live ashore approved but they did not pay for the move because he is not here long enough. Now, Someone that he talked to got things confused and told him we would be getting a check for around 3000 in the next 3 weeks for the move. He said they calculated milage + set amounts for having to move my son and I. We were not expecting this at all since we knew he wasn't here long enough, so when they told us it was a mistake and that we wouldn't be getting the money it wasn't a shock.
Now I'm just trying to think about things for when we move to his duty station...We currently have stuff here and in ohio, and were thinking it would be easier to move ourselves. My dad has a large trailer that he moved our stuff here in, and it was quite simple. (aside from paying for diesel! lol!)
Will it be that easy to get reimbursed for the move to our permanent duty station if we chose to move ourselves? I haven't heard of anyone saying they moved themselves so I'm just curious about how that works!
Also, If you are looking for something near base, keep in mind even something like 10 miles away can take about a 20 min drive with all of the traffic lights! I went to almost every apartment near base, so if you have questions or anything let me know!
