My son started A School 6/13/11 - He's an EM Nuke.  He  PIR'd BC 5/13/11.  He's been in INDOC since 5/14.  I'm brand new to all of this and this is the first time I've started a discussion.

If there are any of you out there that have new Nukes in either of these two classes, let me know.  I'm sure the veteran Moms will gladly help out as they can.  I have no idea what their schedule is or when they will graduate.  I'm trying to learn the ropes here - it's a different ball game from BC.

YAY, MAMA C!!!

I was so happy to see your new discussion group!  I hope that when the other new nuke moms, gf's and loved ones look at the nuke page, they will see this and jump in...

I still don't have a graduation date for my son's class (1133) but I'm hoping another mom will know and post it.

I'm guessing 6 months for EM/ETs...and the veteran nuke moms are wonderful.  They'll jump into your discussion when

you have questions and help!

Swim - I've heard the same thing - EM/ET 6 month A School.  If that holds true, he would graduate A School right before Christmas?  That would be an awesome Christmas present - let him come home for the holidays!   I won't hold my breath, but that would be great!

Anyone know for sure if they would get to come home for Christmas?

Hi Ladies,

My son is currently an MM at Goose Creek on a grad hold.  He has completed Boot Camp, A School (thus the MM rank) and the academic portion of Nuke School.  He is on hold to go to Prototype which is the last leg of training before they deploy.

It seems like his A School lasted only 3 months. He was then on a short grad hold and the Nuke School Academic portion lasted 6 months.  He graduated from that in February.  He has been working security at the base in Goose Creek and has finally gotten an assignment to start Prototype in Goose Creek on July 5.  That will last another 6 months and then who knows.

My son did get to come home for Christmas.  If they are in Goose Creek the whole base goes on a Stand Down for the holiday.  It is really nice.  I won't see him this Christmas though as he will be in the final stages of Prototype.  I am going to SC in a couple of weeks and will spend time with him just before Prototype starts.

Hard to believe that I am a veteran nuke mom, but I guess I am.

Lion55 - Isn't MM school shorter than EM or ET?  This first phase for EM's is 24 weeks, which puts him graduating around mid-December.  Needless to say, it's long!  Looking forward to seeing him sometime in July to deliever his car.  He's looking forward to driving again.

If he's on Stand Down, then how long will he be able to be home at Christmas?

Mama,

When my son got to drive a car for the first time after boot camp, he said "I have finally gotten some human rights back."  He just drove around Charleston just because he could!

The Navy has done wonderful things for my son.  He is a gifted person as well as most all in Nuke school.  He just didn't know how to focus all that until the Navy showed him how!  My parents live in South Carolina near Goose Creek so he is living with them.  He will do Prototype there in Goosed Creek so it has worked out well for him.

My sailor was home for a week.  He had to be back on base early January 2 for muster. Put a cramp in New Years Eve for him but I think that is the way they plan it!

Hi Mama C.I also am a Veteran but still learning everyday.my son is a ET now in Prototype school in New York he was one of the few from his class that got lucky and hasnt had no hold time.he will be done hopefully by October then off to the Fleet!  I remember those A school days....as long as he keeps up with his points he should have some free.they have a certain amount of study hours each day they must put in.if they get behind some Saturdays will be study hours too.at times my sailor wasnt finished with his day until 10 or 11 oclock , it does get very stressful at times honestly its a fast pace school but your son must be a gifted son too so he should be ok.just dont stress to much if you dont hear from him as often as you would like. Thanksgiving they are off Thur- Sunday.looks like Grad.day will be maybe Dec 16th? and looks like that is when his Christmas break will also be! i am just guessing at this remember that ha.my ET son was in A school for 6 months and also for Power school.a care package is always nice to send them like microwaveable things condiments ect,,, they dont have alot of room so keep that in mind.good luck to your new sailor man!!!!!

Hi Tammy,

I see you around here lots.  I think our sons were in boot camp about the same time.  PIR was like a hundred years ago wasn't it!  See there, you have taught me something.  I didn't realize the EM and ET A School was longer than MM.  Learn something new every day.  When will your son know which ship/boat he will be assigned to?

For the new moms, a "ship" is a SHIP and a "boat" is a Submarine.

Have you heard anything about a Navy Cruise that family can sail on?  I know the Navy used to do that but not sure if it is still in practice today.

Hi,my ET son Grad.1-15-10.he is not sure yet what ship he will be assigned to yet but he put in for Japan so most likely it will be the 'Ronald Reagan Carrier' but nothing in stone quite yet.I think the Navy Cruise is still in practice that would be lovely to attend one of them!  good luck to your sailor......

Lion - Thanks for the Navy definition of Ships and Boats!

Also, I think my son is currently in a similar situation that your son was in - he HAS to learn how to focus and use his study time wisely.  My son, B, is a smart cookie, just needs to direct all that gray matter back into study action again.  He graduated high school last June 2010, and got out of the habit of studying.

This past week A School started 6/13.  I'm thinking this event is slapping him back into reality of school!  He's figuring out what is important.  I don't think he's ever studied this much!  This Mama is just chuckling!

Have an great day!

The Navy does wonderful things to bring out the real sons and daughters we all know we raised!

Hi there Ladies,

Glad there is a group for Class 1135, when I looked before I didn't see one.

My son is EM and PIR'd May 6.  We spent last weekend in Charleston visiting him and this weekend is his first chance to wear civilian clothes since he left home what seems like ions ago.  It was sooooo hot and felt so bad for him in the uniform but there are perks we found that comes with the uniform.  We got discounts at the hotel, the Aquarium and the Patriot's Point Museum.  Not to mention the reaction from people who respect our United States Service men and women in uniform. I don't post often but I wanted to share my weekend with you and how proud I am of our sons and daughters who are at Goose Creek making their way through school.

Good Luck to all.

It's been a busy couple of weeks here in my neck of the woods.  We just hosted my nephew's high school grad party yesterday - thus the busy-ness of the past 10 days or so.

My EM is getting used to school and all that goes with it.  He loves the GC area, but he's finding out how much studying is involved.  Just last week alone he had over 20 hrs. study time on top of school itself!  All the studying is very new to him.  He seems to be good with all of it and it definitely keeps him busy!

TammyRuth - Good call on the microwavable stuff.  It makes sense to have things like that there, especially with the crazy hours they keep.

Shanermansmom - I bet my son is wishing for the day when civies will be his mode of dress, but he sure does look good in uniform!  All of our military looks good!

Still trying to figure out when I/we can get his car to him.  He should be classing up after July 4th, so he can have his car after that.  We live about 13 hrs. away drive time, so we would have to drive down and fly home.  Trying to look for the most economical way of getting there and back again.  Airfare is ridiculously expensive especially with getting a one-way ticket.   sigh
