OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I posted a lengthy note on reasons to avoid names on the "Leaving for Bootcamp in June" group. It's so easy to put 2 and 2 together when you start mentioning names. My son can become air crew in his rate which requires top secret clearance, internet posts can stay cached for years, I don't want to put him or any other sailor in jeopardy.

whatelks67, ElleBee and I are a week ahead of you and I'm sure she would agree that if you write letters or think up funny jokes or questionnaire's to mail your son it will pass the time. I write every single day, sometimes nonsense. I hear these first few weeks are really rough. When you get the address mail everything out so he gets it next Sunday. I just got my letter yesterday. Some left before ours and have not received a letter. I too am impatient, I'm a planner but I think the Navy will change that for you...'hurry up and wait' they say.

no, nothing will change me.  I literally tracked my two sons and ex-husband down through the US Forest Service, they went on a trip two states away, and well he's got "driving issues"  so my one stipulation besides careful driving was to call as soon as they arrived.  Well he didn't, and I tracked them down through the Forest Service.  Needless to say, he nows takes my stipulations seriously!

I think I have all of you in the calendar.  As always, let me know if I've messed something up. :)

For the newbies - Boxes arrive anywhere from 3-7 days after they get to GL.  Form letters are usually 7-10 days after arrival, BUT that can vary a lot if their division takes longer to form. They write their first letters home on the second or third Sunday after they begin BC and those tend to hit your mailbox on Thursdays unless you live closer to GL.  Phone calls tend to come sometime around their third week of BC, and they don't get to call home normally on holidays so don't hold your breath for the 4th.  It is a journey, but with every step that you meet, you are that much closer to seeing your Sailor!  GOOD LUCK!!!

Whatelks - SR (seaman recruit) is a good way to talk about your loved one without worrying about giving too much info.  As Monkeymind said, we want to keep their identities hidden if possible, but it doesn't take much research for a RDC to link our comments to our SR's so the most important thing to remember is to NEVER give an RDC a reason to try to find your SR!  :)  It is a journey!

my son got to BC on 6/22/2011 i would like to added to the calendar.. he is my only child and I am missing him so much.. i have been tears since he left , trying to have patience but it is killing me.. i'm sure i will make it

what is a RDC?

Recruit Division Commander

thanks

I've created a PIR group for 8/12/11, come on over.

PIR 08/12/11

well, spent the whole day (well, from 6 am to 3:pm) at MEPS on wed with my daughter.  while they were giving them their travel information she was informed that her and 6 others were't going as their flight had been cancelled so we spent the next 3 hours waiting to find out what was going to happen.  well, she's in the USN and already has a long weekend off, lol.  she isn't flying out now until monday so she got to come home.  there were still people there from tuesday that also had cancelled flights.

i felt bad for everyone because she was the only one with family there to watch.

I know what you mean duhhuh58, the day my son shipped he was in the last group to swear in and there were 3 Army and then my son who is Navy.  One of the Army guys had no one there, I couldn't stand it, so I adopted him, so that day I had one in the Army and one in the Navy.  I hope he does well, too.  I wanted to rant that there wasn't someone there for him, but I know things happen sometimes.  I'm on pins and needles waiting for my SR's PIR date, right now I'm fearful of it being the same week my daughter starts kindergarten:(!  Thank the lord my SR is so mature, the minute he found our about the possible conflict, he said, "it's ok mom, you can't miss her first day of school, and you've been at everything I've ever done, I'd miss you, but I will certainly understand your being between a rock and a hard place.  Besides, Dad, Grandmama and Granddaddy will be there."  I thought, I raised a wonderful son!
ive only found 2 others on 9/250 i know there has to be more wonder who is the brother div     ? guess ill have to ask my son lol hope everyone has a great weekend
whatelks67.... my son didnt want us at meps with him he said he was a 20 yr old man and wanted to start this journey alone yes it hurt but i respected his wishes but dont get me wrong i wish i was there so great on ya for being there with the other guy says that you are a great person
