Hi everyone my name's Nicole.

I have a few questions, needing help. My husband and I just got married last weekend, basically whats next? He's in ATT school in GL, will be in GL at least until next summer. I'm wondering how long is the process with paperwork until i can move there? We'd like to live on base housing.

Is deers the paperwork we need to get done in order for me to move?

Any advice or comments would help.

Thank you :)

Where are you moving from?

The Navy will not pay for your move, as you married after he had his A school orders. You will pay to move yourself.  He has to submit a chit to Live Ashore, and you'll probably not get base housing as there is a waiting list.  He needs to talk to his chain of command about starting the process.

DEERS just adds you as a dependent.

I'm moving from California

He needs to get you in DEERS and then get you signed up for Tricare(the health insurance) but you can move whenever you want. Once his page 2 (the page in his service record that says he has dependents, which makes him eligible for base housing) is updated he can start all the paper work to get base housing.
Personally, unless you have kids and are needing multiple bedrooms, base housing in IL isn't worth it, you can generally make more money if you live off base. We did and we liked the apartment complex we lived in, even though people will generally say its not in the "best" part of town. We never had trouble in them, and I know several wives who lived there as well. They were called Northgate. I would look at all of your options.
Either way as Anti said, YOU have to pay to move all of your stuff, because you got married after he had orders to Great Lakes. So be prepared for the money aspect, we are currently living in San Diego, and moved from GLs. It was a long long drive, and the truck was expensive. I would budget at least 2000 for the truck, gas and trailer should you need to tow your car(if you have one). You should be eligible for a military discount at any company but Uhaul?? There was one place I called cause online it said they gave the discount, but you had to call and when I called they said they didn't, so it was confusing, but they were more expensive anyway so we went with Budget.
Sorry to ramble on. But we just made this move in January, and are now getting ready to move again in October to Hawaii.
Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
oh my goodness!!! thank you. :) there's soooo much to learn still. it's just so complicated. :) but thank you for the info. helps :)

Does anyone know any shipping information? I'm thinking to ship all of my furniture and clothing to GL. Driving by myself doesn't seem like an option all the way from Cali

You could look into ABF U-pack, I know several military couples who have used it and they do a good job - and they move your stuff really fast. And the cost is pretty similar to renting a truck and moving it yourself (once you add in gas/mileage/etc), we did a quote for OR to Great Lakes and it was about $2000, so CA would probably be similar. Oh and what it is, is you pack up your stuff and load it into the container, then they pick it up, move it, and drop it off at your new place, you unload, then they come get the empty container. Same thing as PODS but they're supposed to be way more reliable...
thank you for the info. on shipping. it's just hard because i don't think our furniture (we have very little) and clothing is worth shipping or moving in a truck for $2,000+ so i'm trying to think of the wise thing to do. but i'll be moving the week of 7/18

He will need a car in Glakes to have Live Ashore approved.  Emily, am I correct on that?  It was what some other wives had told me.

Mmmm, good point - they do have to have a vehicle to get live ashore...but I was just assuming she meant she didn't want to drive a moving truck out here by herself...
I'm guessing that's why he's set on living on base? Because it won't fly, so sorry.
i do have a car. i'm currently thinking about driving my car to gl and packing it with our most needed clothes and etc. whatever fits in my trunk/car. OR shipping our furniture and driving my car to gl. it's just sooo stressful!!! i really don't want to drive a moving truck on my own for 2/3 days =/
