Hi, my husband just graduated from bootcamp at great lakes and is now at DLI to learn Russian. He wants me to move there as soon as possible so that i can be with him but i have a few questions.

First of all my husband and I own ferrets (which are illegal to own in California). We really want to bring them with us but we are trying to find a way that we can take them with us without possibly losing them.

I kind of want to drive across country to move there but the problem is i am selling my car because its a beater. I know the navy will pay for me to ride on a plane, train or bus but would they help at all with a rental car or milage? Also i am under 25 so I dont even know if I am able to rent a car.

Also, I have no idea how the whole moving process works, are they going to have somebody call me to help me move? or do i need to go and see somebody to set up the arrangements. My husband doesnt know any of this info and wants me to see if i am able to find anything out on my own. I just don't know where to go ive looked online for resources and i seem to be hitting a brick wall at this point. should i just want until they brief him further?

I'm sorry I don't have more info on the wife/spouse side of things, wish I could help you more with your questions.  Perhaps research the DLI sites for info on such topics. http://www.dliflc.edu/index.html  http://presidioofmontereyhousing.com/  http://www.monterey.army.mil/

I'm not sure if you will find what you need on these sites but they are a site.  There should be an omsbudsman office.  http://apps.mhf.dod.mil/pls/psgprod/f?p=MI:CONTENT:0::::P4_INST_ID,...

As for the ferrets, not sure if you'll be able to take them.  Good luck and welcome to the site.  Also, it's a good idea to not publically post your sailor's language.  OPSEC and all.

I don't know if this helps, there is a ferret association, that helps find ferrets good homes.  My children grew up with them, they are great friends, find them a good home, don't try taking them to CA. Just my opinion.
My husband and I just did all of this. I don't know if you still need the info but let me know if you do. He's learning russian too.
My BF is graduating in two days from Great Lakes and he too is going to DLI and learning Russian! He and I plan to get engaged and married probably while he is there (in Monterey) since this whole process takes 15 months (we've been told) so these are questions that I know I will need answers to as well, in the near future. I'll try finding some answers from different places and people and anything at all that I come up with, I will share on here! Best of luck to you and your husband! Hope you can figure out the ferret situation! And keep us posted with your moving plans as they progress. I know your situation and circumstances could greatly help me in the future as I'm sure they will help many!!! Thanks so much for posting this! :D

Hi, My name is Lauren, also under 25, and I am in the same boat! Just not as far along as you. Maybe we can help each other out. My husband has been at basic since Aug. 25th he will be headed to DLI after and I have all the same questions about moving. How? When? What? Who? Where?  What I understand from coming from a military family and talking to the recruiter it depends on when his commander gives him the opportunity to put in the paperwork to get you out there. As for where there is limited housing. You need to discuss with your husband if you want to live on or off post. this website is great. From what i've seen and heard off post is either expensive or dangerous.

www.presidioofmontereyhousing.com

It will link you to the site for what's considered "on post" housing and show you some rental property. It changes all the time. As for moving i know you can ship your car but i have heard mostly not good things about that. Also i have a sister-in-law who has moved several times with the Air Force and they have movers come pack your things. Now if they pack you, you can't have anything in cardboard boxes or they have to unpack and repack it. This is all just info I've heard and put together. Hope it helps!

I believe all military married housing is on Fort Ord property which is outside of Monterey.  I am pretty sure that there isn't any housing actually on the DLI property that would be considered married housing.  Of course, I've been wrong before, lol.

Welcome to the CTI Group and congrats on your soon to be sailors!
