While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

7/12/11 Boot Camp departure
Hello Navy Moms,
Did anyone have a son or daughter leave for bootcamp today? My son left from Dallas, Tx heading for Great Lakes. I thought I would get my 2 minute call tonight but I didn't, so hopefully, he'll call in the morning.

My Son left yesterday from OKC to Great Lakes. I received my call about 2 am. Nervous but still so very proud!

Thanks all. I got the call around midnight. He said something that was scary to me. He said they wouldn't be going to sleep until 10 pm the following night. Could that be possible? He couldn't talk long and I didn't want the time asking him the reason for it. Someone said to see how they respond under circumstances when they have little sleep and to prepare them for what it will be like on watch duty. Is that really true they are up for over 24 hours the first day/night they arrive?

My daughter started boot camp yesterday at Great Lakes and the call came in yesterday early afternoon. Hopefully you got yours already. I also called her recruiter and got her address, so this may help you also. Seems like they are there at the same time. Let me know if you hear anything. She also told me before she left that they would be getting little to no sleep for the next couple of days. I was able to see her at MEPS and she already looked tired along with the rest of the bunch. Im sure they will be just fine.

My daughter left on the 12th From Florida. She went to Jacksonville for the night and got to Great Lakes last night. She called at 11:22pm so the waiting game begins.

My boyfriend was probably with her in Jacksonville :) he said MEPs took forever. Good luck to you and your daughter. Hopefully the next 9 weeks go by fast.

My son PIRed last week. The first night they were taken to temporary barracks at approximately 4 a.m. and then were up again around 5ish, so the answer is, no, they don't get much sleep the first night. Remember...the vast majority are late teens and early twenties and this probably isn't the only time they've stayed up all night! :) The SRs come from all over the country (world in some cases) and from all different backgrounds. They'll survive just fine and so will their moms. At least we know where they are and aren't laying in bed wondering if they've been in an accident! :)
Box should come in 5-7 days, form letter in roughly 10 days (may be more), real letter should arrive late week after they've spent their second Sunday at BC. Once the letters begin, you will be amazed how much better you sleep and how much faster your days go. Good luck and God bless you all!

Thanks for the info. I don't know why I feel so anxious, my oldest son has been in the Navy for 5 years, however, he was a little older than my baby, who just turned 18. I'm so glad for this website. I wasn't even aware of this 5 years ago. My oldest son, just kind of did his own thing. He went in on the buddy system. It's different this time. I'm more involved. I have found myself praying more now for my son and all military branches.

Thanks for sharing the info on how soon to expect a real letter. My son arrived at bootcamp on July 5, so I was hoping to get a letter around the 18th so I guess I was pretty close. Sure wish it was sooner. And I can't wait for another phone call. It was all I could do to contain myself when he called during his arrival. I had not stopped crying since he left MEPS at noon, and his call came at 6:15 p.m.

My son left Wednesday July 13 arrived in Chicago around 8:30 pm. He called from the airport said he had landed and I didn't hear from him again until 7:30am Friday morning (this morning). He did say that he did not get to sleep until 9pm Thursday night. His recruiter gave him the heads up about not much sleep and to stay awake no matter what. But he says things are fine and will hear from him again in 3 wks or so.
These guys are young and can bounce back quickly with some rest. Plus I'm sure they will learn when its sleep time.. go to SLEEP! haha! As long as they are eating right and sleeping when they should they will be fine, sore, tired and maybe a little homesick but fine.

My son left on the 12th also. We are in OR. There were thunder storms in Denver so he had flight delays and didn't get into Chicago until 4:00am on the 13th so we didn't get the official call until the evening of the 13th. Luckily, he took his cell phone so he was able to keep us updated on all his delays. It is so hard to let them go. I can't wait to get the information to send him letters. His girlfriend has already written an 8 page letter that she is anxious to be able to send. It is hard waiting but it really helps to "talk" with other moms going through the exact same thing
