I am getting ready to make my reservations it seems like alot of the hotels around there have some mixed reviews I am undecided where to stay but need to figure it out real soon.

i stay at the la quinta in gurnee. its clean and very affordable.  This is my 3rd PIR in a year, 1st time i stayed at the Red Carpet Inn..... not clean at all... I do not recommend staying there. Gurnee is a 15 min drive from GL.

I've actually booked two different hotels just because of the reviews from others. I need to do more research, but I have Red Roof Inn and the Navy Lodge. I'll probably go with the Navy Lodge. That's so nice that you're taking along a family pet!! I wish I could take mine, hahaha. I got my first letter last week too, a quick 5 minute phone call tonight, and that's it but better than nothing! My SR said their division wasn't doing great, but he's not allowed to dispose details. I can understand why. I just heard the Chief in the background yelling for them to get off the phones and then we had to hang up. Too bad I didn't get to ask my questions it went so fast! Well, less than a month and I can talk all day long =)

CBsMom- If that was all you heard about the medical info, then I hope everything is okay. I'm sure you would've heard more by now if something was serious. I've heard that a lot of SRs are getting wisdom teeth pulled if they haven't had them pulled! Ouch! My first letter didn't say much about the daily activities, but how he felt about being there. I thought that was odd because he's not the type of guy to express feelings. I won't complain about that =)

I tried for the trivia.  They posted the question and there were 39 replies by the time I posted.  UGH!  Sorry!

My son just called he seems to be a little home sick. He is also 1 that has gotten the cold and pink eye that is going around. He says a couple of the guys have it right now. only had about a 3 min. phone call but guess it is better than nothing atleast I heard his voice!
Oh no....Sorry to hear he is one of the SRs that is ill. I hope he gets better soon. Maybe that will make enjoy his time there a little more. I bet he misses home because mom's are always great at making you feel better =)
We got a about a 2 min. call. My son sounded good and happy. Didn't say much about his div. something happened and he said he had to go. Maybe we will get a letter in the next couple of days.

Don't be too worried about them not feeling they are doing well. It is the RDC's job to push them hard and make them want to push themselves more. Especially since they are a spec op div. They are always harder on our guys cuz it is a tougher road ahead of them. Just keep sending those upbeat letters, include jokes to lighten their day ( I used to print jokes and cartoon strips off the internet to send.) Here is one several of us sent :

A college professor, an avowed atheist, was teaching his class. He shocked several of his students when he flatly stated that once and for all he was going to prove there was no God. Addressing the ceiling he shouted: "GOD, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes!!!!!

The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Ten minutes went by. "I'm waiting God, if you're real, knock me off this platform!!!!"

Again after 4 minutes, the professor taunted God saying, "Here I am,
God!!! I'm still waiting!!!"

His count down got down to the last couple of minutes when a Spec Ops sailor, just released from the Navy after serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and newly registered in the class, walked up to the Professor.

The Sailor hit him full force in the face, and sent the Professor tumbling from his lofty platform. The Professor was out cold!!

The students were stunned and shocked. They began to babble in confusion.

The Sailor nonchalantly took his seat in the front row and sat silent. The class looked at him and fell silent...waiting.

Eventually, the professor came to and was noticeably shaken.

He looked at the Sailor in the front row. When the professor regained his senses and could speak he asked: "What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you do that"?

"God was really busy, protecting America's soldiers, who are protecting your right to say stupid sh#* and act like an @$$hole...so he sent me!!"

Hang in there, your halfway through!

Thats a good one!  Thank you for sharing!

YAY!  Three envelopes containing 4 letters arrived from my SR, today!  Just so you all know, he said they earned a flag!  He did not mention which one.... He said his division is looking forward to the Captain's Cup and they want to win it to be in the Hall of Fame, and they believe they will be able to achieve it.  That sounds to me like they are working together and doing OK as a division.  He has gained 5 pounds, grown another 1.5 inches and is a little "harrier" than usual because there is no time to shave his chest.  LOL!  He likes the food there, but he misses Pizza Fridays, Steak Sundays and Cheeseburger Mondays.  Can you tell we have a few mealtime routines?  It is our favorite time to gather every day...They are keeping busy and time seems to go by faster each day.  Hope you all find letters in your mailboxes, soon, as well!  Keep sending the positive.  Just to share a few excerpts of what I wrote him in my letter yesterday:

They expect more out of you all, so they are going to push you harder.  They need to make sure that you are physically and mentally prepared for some of the assignments you get.  You are in a division with Navy Divers, Salvage, EODs, Rescue Swimmers and future SEALs.  This is the Elite division on the Navy, The Best of THE BEST.  There is no room for slacking, you always need to be on the ready.  This is not a one man show and everyone needs to work together as a TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More!  This is temporary and you will get through this!  You all have the support and pride of your families behind you!  You are all over half way through. I know some days will be harder than others as you go through this process.  Remember, it is about finding the extra strength in yourself to maintain your focus and push through the rough patches because the prize on the other side is worth the struggles, now.  We miss you and we are so very proud of you!  The RDCs are there to push you past your limits, to find out what you are made of, to make you all the best Navy Sailors you can be.  There is a reason and a purpose for all they do and it is so you can become THE BEST and join the Elite!  Often, it helps to know why they are doing this, it is the game...Enjoy the ride for now and know this is such a small blip in life, it will be over soon and you will be on to learning and building your career in the Navy!

Thanks for sharing! Glad they are doing good! I have recieved a total of 5 letters. The last one says he got the position of AROC so he sings the cadence, he says it is alot of fun! He also said they were getting issued their dress uniforms this week. Hotel reservations are made can't wait for 9/01/11
Hi to all I also received letters yesterday, Th (2 of them) and it looks that they are coming along as a team,  I am soo happy for them!!!! My  son's letters are very positive and very happy and that he is really enjoying the BC and everybody in his DIV. He mentioned to me that on Sunday they are off from 8 am to 13 hours, so funny he told me mom everything here it's military time soo get used too :) At that time they can go to church, have to do laundry, shine their boots, etc and its time for them to talk and have a little fun and write letter. Yes they are the Elite of the navy, so they have to push harder to get the best of them, about 3 physical training every day, and extra studies and I feel that they now are a team and willing to push as far as the are able to push. I already made my reservations and can't wait till Sept 1
