OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

So, August moms~ How are you doing?
My son leaves for GL on 8/8 and I am excited, proud, nervous, a bit sad and much more! Lots of emotions! He has been a DEPper since early November, so I should be ready... but not really!
He is in for 6 yrs because he is going to be a nuke. He says he wants to make a career of the Navy. Time wll tell.
I have 4 kids... a married son (lives close by), a daughter 22 (in college and moving out next month ~finally), my DEP son- 18, and my baby~ almost 15 yr old son.
With my daughter and my Navy boy leaving soon I am going to have a near empty nest, after YEARS of having a full, noisy house. I also hate autumn, so I am thinking I need to be VERY busy when that time comes. Life is about changes. I know that, but it sure is bittersweet to let your babies grow up!
So, how are you gals doing?

The recruiter had my son bring his into the office so that it didn't get misplaced before he left. So to answer your question ( and this is one of the few details I actually know) yes he needs to take his soc sec. card with him.

My son has been DEP since last summer but now as I am down to counting hours before he leves , I find myself overwhelmed by emotions. He is my oldest child ~first to leave home! My heart is filled with pride and yet I feel unprepared for him to go!

Spencer's mom...my heart goes out to you. Mine is my youngest, has gone to and graduated college, so at least he has "been away" from home, but this is different. We all know and feel your fears and your pride. The emotions are so very strong. We love our "kids" and want the best for them. So many different things go into this, but it is different than going off to college, believe me. It is SO hard though when it's your first to leave. I will pray for you and your son. I will be thinking of you. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you Past45 for the kind words~ I received the "box" today. As my friends say I will live to tell the tale but oh my how my heart aches at times for my son. I will say his little sister was thrilled at the arrival of the box today and was the first one in it! She wanted to see what her brother had sent us ~LOL! I am grateful to have his younger brother (15) and sister (6) to keep me busy!Thank you for the prayers~ those are most comforting!

Spencer's Mom, How long was it before you received your box and when did you receive your "I'm here" phone call?. My son leaves with the recruiter Sunday and flies to Great Lakes on Monday.
Also, did your son take his cell phone down there? I know they have to send it back, but was just curious.
I am glad you have the younger ones to keep you busy and that you got the "box"! I will continue to pray for you and your son. I know...it's really the only thing we can do, besides positive words and thoughts of encouragement!
See you in boot camp group, soon. I will write and let the rest of you moms know how it all goes!

Thanks for the response ZZsmom! I didn't really care who answered, as we are trying to get things organized. I also was just curious as to when the 30 sec calls came in. It looks like its late at night or early morning, from a lot of moms'. I would hate to miss that! Had call forwarding put on the home number so we can try to always be available!
It also helps to know that we will get the box about 4 days after he leaves. This sight has been so helpful, just to help us moms to feel like we know what's going on.
Glad your daughter is safely there. I will continue to pray for all you moms and our kids!

My son will be leaving in 3 weeks and I will never be prepared for him to go and I can't seem to cut the umbilical cord. We just spent a weekend at a family reunion and my eyes were filling up with pride too - it happened to be a Christening that you went to and I cried too just thinking it was only yesterday we had his - but tht was 20 years ago.
I am having a special mass said for him next week - as a mass of 'special intentions' and I will not have a dry eye for weeks to come. Jim is my oldest and first to leave - he seems to have one foot out the door already - but I still see him as my baby - only I can see the nervousness and what I think is some apprehension - Prays to you and all of us as our children start this new journey

We had a pastor say a prayer for our son, as well. We, as a family, and his girlfriend. None of us had a dry eye. All we can do is pray for their strength and health and that God will truly watch over and guide each and every one.

Hi Moms,
Our son left for Great Lakes yesterday (Aug 8th). We were there for his swearing in (it was only him!) so very special. He is the youngest, daughter went off to college 4 years ago and son has been a DEPer since last September, so we have had alot of time to prepare. He's ready, we're ready so it wasn't too bad. He actually cried harder saying goodbye to his sister than to us! Hang in there moms, our kids are on a new exciting adventure!!
