The Shadowhawks are an Electronic Attack Squadron & are deployed on the Bush aircraft carrier in the Gulf.

There are 216 sailors assigned to the Shadowhawks -- 190 men and 26 women.  They received pillowcases when they arrived on the ship, so no need to worry about pillowcases for this adoption.

I received this sweet message from our POC:  “…it is so hot out here.  But it seems wrong to ask for anything.  Whatever you do will be received well by our Sailors.  And, thank you for what you are doing, not just for us, but for every Sailor life you are touching.”  He went on to say that our ideas for them would be far better than anything he could think of & he didn’t want to ask others for input as he wants this to be a huge & total surprise.

So, Moms we have our work cut out for us …  One thing I thought we should keep in mind is that they will be receiving their boxes right around  9/11 – the reason they are deployed & still fighting this war on terror that the other side started 10 years ago.  Let’s make certain that our sailors know:

                         “We Will Never Forget.”

Many will have sad memories of that day – NYC, DC & PA, let’s do our best to put a positive spin on things. I was thinking for a theme - “Picnic in Central Park”.  Central Park is a GREAT place for a picnic!

And, August is ‘National Picnic Month.’  In Central Park, people read, play ball, throw Frisbees, children blow bubbles & draw pictures with sidewalk chalk. There are artists painting & drawing, people writing or talking.  Of course, we can’t do anything about walking a dog (& pooper-scooping), but people jog, do yoga & catch some rays while playing in the fountains.  And, of course, eat!!!  (So we need food/snack items.)

Perhaps items can be red, white & blue to acknowledge American endurance on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Shipping will be August 22 – 27th.

These are just my thoughts.  So, let the discussions begin … !!!!

MESSAGE JUST RECEIVED THAT THE FEMALE SAILORS ARE BEING TAKEN ON.  If someone wants to help in some way, contact Lauren.

I have contacted the corporate offices for Bass Pro and LL Bean.  Unfortunately we do not fit their "qualifications" for product donations.  Both are mainly about outdoor activities/living & education.  My point was - "hey our military has to live, work, fight and die all outdoors..."  But, neither would bite on the attempt at a guilt trip donation.

That being said, you might have a better response from a local manager.  It certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a try.  Let Molly or me know if you need a 'donation request letter' and we'll get one written and to you.

I did go to Home Depot for last month's adoption of the sub.  The store itself wouldn't make a donation, but their employee donation group would.  I just had to fill out a request form.

Didn't get far with Lowes either.  They are more into 'local' things, like the Boy Scouts, etc.  But that was at the corporate level, give the local store a chance.

No surprise there regarding Lowes - they love to advertise "American" this and that, but when it comes right down to it ~ ALL of their "behind the scenes" work (tele-soliciting, etc.) is done from pretty much the same area where our men and women "live, work, fight and die all outdoors" ~ in other words, I no longer visit Lowes. Sorry, had to vent this morning.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought of another suggestion.....thoses little water bottle drink packets that are loemonade flavored? That is picnicky.
Those flavor packets are a great idea!  Absolutely they are right in with our picnic theme!!  Besides they will make the water taste more like 'fun'!!
ok I have not heard anything back from the comic book shadowhawk, but I do know that they are not being made right now . I have ordered a few from ebay and will pick up a couple more before we ship...thought they would be fun to get
Didn't locate Costco's this AM.  I ended up in RI and I know it is in MA.  By then it was getting towards 2P and I needed to get home.  Tomorrow is always another day.

I just posted some info regarding donations on the main Molly page, but in case you missed it, I'll summarize it here.  You can read the other info when you have time.

1) On a whim I contacted the FDNY to see if they could send some patches to our Shadowhawks.  Well, they "will gladly donate" FDNY hats; FDNY Memorabilia 9/11 coin; and, FDNY Blankets/throws.  Enough so that they will all get at least one item, possibly 2.  Their letter ended "We are proud of all those serving our country & would be honored to be part of this project.  Sincere, X  XXX"   So a shout-out thank you to FDNY - you were and always will be TRUE HEROES.

2) Reebok has a new line of female work-out clothing.  They have approved a donation of a complete outfit (of the new-line) for each of our female Shadowhawks - top, shorts & socks!

3) I also have 2 commitments on candy contributions from local candy companies.  One is a small shop.  The other is NECCO (as in NECCO wafers...)  They only give product contributions to people who live in MA - so I asked.  They make many of the 'old-fashioned' candy we all remember.  Besides Necco wafer, they make MaryJanes, Mint Juleps, Nutty Squirrels & even the candy drops that come on strips of paper.  I know you younger Moms may not know what these are, but us in the next age group do!

So keep your fingers crossed and say a little prayer that they get everything to us in time.  Everyone knows that summertime is a real slow time in businesses.  Guess that is it for now.

Love that you have been so busy!!  And look at all the payoffs!!  WOW!!

Keeping my fingers crossed is going to slow down my typing...  but for our sailors I am willing to do it!!

It has been wonderful to be kept so busy!  This has been a month were lots of activity is just "what the doctor ordered" or would have if I saw one & they felt I should be busy!!!  LOL

Way to go Donna, what wonderful news.

AHHH NYPD..that is FLIPPIN' AWESOME.."Thata girl"
