Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Graduation Weekend Question
I'm sure this has been addressed many times over, but I am getting conflicting information. Last week I talked to my son's recruiter and was told that my son would have the weekend of PIR off. He said that my son would have most of the rest of PIR day off, the majority of Saturday and even a little on Sunday before having to be at the airport. Well, I've seen posts about SRs leaving a few hours after PIR. And just now on RTC facebook, there were several people that said they usually fly out very early on Saturday morning, as early as two or 3:00 a.m.!!
I understand that it depends on where you are going, but why can't things be a little easier to understand. This is the 2nd time the recruiter has gotten our hopes up, WAY up, only to discover he is wrong again. First he told us that my son would get to come home for five days after graduation. Then he said he'd have the weekend with us in Chicago.... :(

It seems that the "change" in liberty weekend happened while my son was in bootcamp. He arrived at RTC on March 9 and his PIR date was 5/6/11. It was very frustrating as I had already made our hotel reservations for the entire weekend. The hotel was very understanding and we were not charged for the 2 extra nights I had booked prior to finding out our son would be shipping out to his A school that Sat. morning.
The phrase "Grad-n-Go" is no longer used per RTC. Your son will be told towards the end of bootcamp if his A school is at Great Lakes or in another state. My son knew before he left for bc that his A school was in Calif. It all depends what their rate (job) is. Mine did ship out Sat. morning following PIR. We were able to meet him at the airport (at 4:30AM) to spend as much time with him as possible before his flight left. My advise is to keep in contact with you son while he's in bootcamp and hopefully he will know sooner than later if he will be shipping out on the Sat. following PIR or staying at Great Lakes for his A school. I have been feeling lately that my son's recruiter is wrong about way more things than he is correct. I understand that changes happen, but if the changed happened between march and may, then come July he should have had the new information.

Yes, I agree that the recruiter "should" know what changes are being made. That said, the recruiters are responsible for many things. Some recruiters are brand new, and are hitting the ground running. My suggestion is that you ask questions here, and let seasoned moms, most way more seasoned than me, answer them. The real truth is once the SR's are safely in the hands of RTC, their recruiters kind of fade into the background, and are looking for the next recruit!
Please know that there is not a mom here who would delibertly give you false or wrong information. We are here to help each other.

My son is ship 03 DIV 335 and is due to graduate on Oct 7. I'm confussed about the black backpack you are talking about. I was under the impression we can't bring him his cell phone, etc. He will be leaving for A school in Monterey, CA and I'm assuming on the Saturday after graduation.
Maybe it's too early to know if he leaves then? We live in California and are planning on flying home on that day. Wouldn't it be nice if we were at the airport together?

Recruits are now issued black backpacks instead of utility belts, so you may be able to use that and not buy one. This started this month. You can give him his cell phone and lap top at the airport. He cannot take the cell phone back to the RTC with him, which is probably what you are thinking of. Join the group, PIR 10/07/2011 TG 47 (Divisions 329-340 & 947), to connect with others with loved ones with that PIR date. There is also a lot of great information in the Pages once you get there.

I completely understand, how are we suppose to book airline and hotel no knowing how many days they are actually going to have free that weekend. And if you wait till the last minute you want be able to fine accomodations

If your Sailor will be staying in GL, then plan to fly out Sunday or Monday because you will have through Sunday with them. If your Sailor is flying out, then plan to fly out Sunday that way you can spend time at the airport with them on Saturday ora if they end up flying out later than Saturday, you will be able to spend the day with them. That's just my thoughts anyway if you have the option.

Does anyone here have past experience with a PIR date in December sometime? My SR is a DEP'er and goes in 10/24 so we expect PIR to be 12/16 or could it really be 12/24? He already knows he goes to SC for A-School. Anyone have any advise? I am still holding out hope he can come home until after January and then they would start A-School, which is what the recruiter said MIGHT happen...???

Join the group, Leavin' for bootcamp in October. You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together.
Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there.
Yes, it is very possible his PIR could be 12/23/11, but it could be the week before or after. Yes, there is also a big possibility that he will go home for the Christmas break since some A Schools close for the Christmas break. That will be leave and he may go in the hole on leave days for some of those days (borrowing days so that he cannot take them later), but what a wonderful Christmas present for you.
Join the group, Religious Program Specialist, and perhaps someone on there would know more about how that A School is run. (RP is the only rating with A School in SC.)

Keep in mind he won't know when he PIR's until he gets there. There is a chance that once he gets there he has to wait a week to get a division togehter before he start bootcamp.
IF he is allowed to take leave due to PIRing during Christmas time frame, HE will have to pay to go home and the difference that it costs to get to his duty station.

What I was told is that your son would probably have the best info...when my son called last week he informed us that he is a "Grad-n-Go" so he will ship out Sat morning after graduation, so we will only get to see him until he has to report back to base Friday evening. Just what I know.
