Hi everyone! Wanted to get some opinions/suggestions on living on or off base in Goose Creek....

If you (or someone you know) lived off base, where was it/how far from base/cost?

Benefits and negatives to living on base?

Thanks!!

They have to move off base the same day as their graduation ceremony. No choice. At this time they get a big portion of their bonus.

There are many landlords that don't hold them to a 1 yr lease.

Some  of these nukes are practical & rent a nice but not expensive place with 2 or 3 others they'll have money left over from their housing allowance. My son wasn't practical lol. He & 2 others rented a 3 BR condo with a hot tub, work out room & pool. That might have been OK but instead of sticking with the basics like buying a card table & chairs, a mattress on the floor they rented a houseful of furniture (including complete BR sets) which cost them each $1,000/month instead of sticking with bare basics like a card able & chairs, a mattress on the floor, etc......

The car dealers are waiting & ready for them. My son had originally planned to pay cash for a practical but nice used car. He came home with a nice used sports car with hefty monthly payments.

My sailor is graduating A school at the end of October. We have the option of on or off base housing. There's plenty of on base for married sailors...just trying to determine the best option for us. :) Gathering all the facts before we make a decision!

Correction: They have to move off base only after power school graduation.

It's my understanding that during A school they only get a housing allowance if they are married.

hmmm Had a link to facebook page for what I thought was Moving House for Military Spouse, but when I clicked on it went to my facebook.  So, removed the post.  I don't know how to link it, but you should be able to find it.  There are pics of both the old and new housing at Goose Creek.
For those MMs graduating in December, because of the long time on grad hold, they are allowed to stay in the barracks.

Guess I should clarify a little bit.... :)

My fiance sailor and I are getting married at the end of A school. I'll be moving back to Goose Creek with him during t-track and for power school and on. :) We're discussing our options for where we want to live. We have seen pictures of the on-base housing online, and driven by the base housing when I was there visiting in August. Definitely a good option. We've heard, though, that living off base can be a nice option and we could save a little money this way. I have looked up the BAH and we are looking for off base apartments that fall within that amount.

My question was for those of you who have lived on base, or whose children, etc who have lived in the on base housing for married sailors - how was your experience? Did you like the on base housing? Would you do it again?

For those of you who have experience with living off base in apartments, townhomes, or homes...are you glad you went that route? Would any of you be able to recommend specific locations for off base housing? How much did it cost? How far from base was it?

We're leaning towards off base, but I'm having a hard time finding off-base options by searching online, and my sailor is in class during most of the apartment office hours. He also doesn't have a car right now to drive around and look for housing.

Thank you!!

Congratulations!!!!

Though I've never lived on base or in SC, I have spoken to those who have during my visits there. And I've often been told that there is really no way of "saving" BAH - you guys will end up using it. I know a couple who lives on base and another one who lives off base and both are perfectly happy with their decision. On base couple loves the fact that the NNPTC is nearby, which makes getting there for PT and muster so much easier. The couple who lives off base enjoy the fact that once he's done with class and studying, he can leave the NNPTC behind and feel like he actually goes "home."

The couple who lives on base got lucky-- they got one of the newer homes so the appliances were all pretty nice (a 3 bedroom, 2 story townhouse). But they do have neighbors who complain that those homes were put together so fast that there are problems like leaks and wiring issues, which (apparently) the older, brick homes don't seem to have. They love the fact that they have a back yard for grilling and feel very much part of the community where they live.

The couple who lives off base has an apartment in Ladson off I-26... about 20-25 minutes from the NNPTC. They are able to sign on short term leases (up to 6 months at a time) and if can produce proper documentation (i.e. formal orders), can do an early termination without a fee. If I remember correctly, their 1 bedroom is around $750-850/month. It was a really nice place and I would be happy to reach out to them to get the name of their apartment complex for you, if you'd like!

Mike and I are also weighing our options and are leaning toward finding housing off base, but we haven't even started looking hahaha. We're hoping to stay close to the NNPTC (staying within Goose Creek or if there's a nice and safe complex in Hanahan, maybe there too). He's from the area and has friends there from high school so here is a list of places he crossed off the list before we even started looking: Springhill Apartments (bad management), Pine Lakes (dangerous-- has history of drugs/theft/violence), Colonial Village (bad management), River Ridge (old, dirty) and Atlantic Palms (forgot why...). Thought I should share this with you!

Thanks Missa!!! We're super excited, and decided to get married during his A school leave! Coming up quick and can't wait :) How's Mike doing? When are you going to move to Goose Creek?

Thanks for all of the awesome input, that's just the type of thing I was looking for :)

I have none whatsoever to offer but news of your upcoming nuptials is just too exciting to ignore.. Congrats!
Thank you so much!!

missa m

Very informative, i am going to pass your info to my DIL, even though I don't think they considered living off base at all.  Moving across country seemed to be as big of a step as they are prepared for.  Kind of nice to know that a house will be waiting for them.

I assume they can move off base once they are there if they decide to later?
