Hi ladies :)

I'm planning on moving to Great Lakes to be with my husband while he's in A school.  Just wondering if anyone knows how long it usually takes for the live ashore chit to get approved.  And if anyone lives here, or knows the area well - what are some good apartments/neighborhoods to live in?

My son & his finance are looking at apartments this week.  So far it looks like Willow Lake, Virginia Beach will be the one.  I will e-mail you with more information shortly.

my daughter was told it could take up to a month.  but, my SIL is already there, moved him up that at PIR.  she was told that since she already has a place to live, DL and a car it might push thru faster.  finding the place to live is what usually holds it up.

when you start looking for a place call Sarge.  he's the absolute best up there!  retired military (army) and deals with the sailors and families every day.  he has his hands into everything.  drives cabs, real estate, just an all around type of guy.

p.s. stay away from Pembroke Club.  the apartments aren't all that bad but they are old and the office puts things out there that aren't totally true.

thank you! i appreciate it! :)

Depending on how long his A-school is, he may or may not get live ashore "chit."  My husband was 3 days short of being able to have live ashore. It was disappointing, even though we were only 13 minutes from base and I had a place to live. You just have to kinda go with the flow and see what happens.

They can be strict, because A-school is a spin off of boot camp and they're still having duty, marching, muster, watch, etc. It's not nearly as secluded or bad as boot camp, but they still do have responsibilities that have to be done. So when people get live ashore, the LPO often is a little more strict on when a person gets a chit for that.

Hope all the best!

my daughter hasn't started A school yet  she' still in ATT school.  she will be in GL until at least March 2012.  she got her live a shore approved within a month of graduation and has been living off base with he husband for a week now.

she was told that live a shore was a privilege and not a right.  she can be told she has to move back to the ship if she starts to fall behind in school.  she has to stay in the ship on duty nights too

So I am totally new to this. My husband graduated from boot camp last Friday October 7th. He is an ET and his A school is 33 weeks. He got the paperwork for the living on shore. About how long does that take to process? I am hoping to be up there soon! Thanks so much.
