Hi everyone,

My husband is stationed at Pearl Harbor but is currently deployed.  I live on the mainland but am planning on moving to Oahu in a few months and setting up a place for us to live.  I am trying to find out what is better: on base or off base housing.  I think I would prefer off base housing but would like opinions of people who may be able to provide insight.  What were the deciding factors for choosing where you live?  For the people living off base, does the amount of BAH cover your expenses in terms of rental cost and utilities?  For the people living on base, do you like the property you live at?

I am looking at Kailua, Kaneohe, Mililani, Kapolei, and Ko Olina but am open to other areas.  Commute time is NOT a factor for me or my husband.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Nancy, My son is living off base in Kaneohe. He is also deployed now. When he get back he said he is moving to another city. I am not sure which city. I know he said there is lots of traffic. I hope you will find the right place to live. Good luck. Laura

i am moving to Oahu in Feb. What did u end up doing?

Commute time will become a factor when you see the maddening island traffic. My son is now close to the base and very happy there.

My son received orders for Kaneohe Bay.  He's out on the Stennis now- getting ready to be detached from his squadron. He has to report back to NAS Lemoore and get their stored belongings ready to be shipped to Hawaii.  He'll be at Pensacola for school for a couple of months- then he'll fly to K-Bay.

My DIL started her BA while they were stationed at NAS Lemoore. She's here in Ohio with me waiting out the deployment. They want to know about housing, childcare (they have a 1 1/2 yr old son), and schooling (she's applying to U of Hawaii)  to finish her undergrad degree in geology. Any advice/suggestions are welcomed.

Don't live on base. My husband is an E-4 and we moved right into housing because we were totally unfamiliar with the lay of the land. About a week in we started regretting it. Crime is incredibly high all over the island, but seems to be more so in the military communities. About a month after moving in our car was up on blocks in the driveway, my groceries were stolen while I was bringing them in, and a friend's motorcycle was stolen while he was spending the night at our house. Forest City hires these joke security guards called Securitas, and the overall attitude from them when you are the victim is "Well, it's your fault for doing X..." We decided after being stuck in a year lease that it was time to move as soon as our lease was up. And then when we went to move out they claimed our old tattered carpet that was in awful condition when we moved in to start with needed to be torn up and replaced at our expense. $2800 later... We moved into a penthouse in Waikiki with electricity, cable, internet, and all utilities included for $50 more than our BAH, and we will break even once the pay increase goes into effect for 2012. We haven't looked back since. I still have friends in my old neighborhood when I visit, but every time I go back I get pretty depressed seeing the communities vs. where we live now. Ultimately it's up to you, I know people who have a great experience in housing, but for us it just wasn't right. My husband gets to base from Waikiki in about 15-20 minutes in the mornings and about 30-45 minutes in the afternoon because of commute traffic.

Thank you for the info.  My son is still on the Stennis. After school in P-cola- he should be in Hawaii by late spring/early summer.

Do you have children?   Do you attend U of H?

My DIL is still hesitant to join him in Hawaii. She likes where we live now- it's by a good university in Ohio. She has a job in a bookstore and is thinking of finishing her degree here.  My only complaint is that my grandson and my son will not get to spend time together personally.

If you think of anything else- don't hesitate to post or send me an email - mariecolee@aol.com.

Merry Christmas!
