airman undesignated...medical dq throws a wrench in our plans!! what to expect?

my SR called today (and yes it was the best 20 minutes of my life to date :) and told me he had been dqed from his original job for medical reasons. i could go on about my annoyance with MEPS about not catching it originally but that won't help anyone...so i am now asking you ladies what i should expect.  i know his school will be about 3 weeks in pcola and then he'll get to come home for a little bit before being stationed.  we had always planned to get married while he in was in a school to insure that i would be on in his orders. now this is impossible...i'm now faced with the possibility of overseas stationing much sooner than i expected and he would definitely move to his first station "single". we will get married as soon as possible but what will that mean for him and myself? any and all advice is appreciated!!

idk if this is true of all undes so please please please dont hold this to be 100% true all the time. but when my husband was in bootcamp the undes got to write down 3 places they wanted (like a wish list) and he said all of the ones he knew got theirs. Idk if it happens all the time or what. Unfortunately that will mean that you will not be on the orders I think my husbands friends knew before the end of bootcamp where they were going but you can start saving money. You could a sell all your big stuff pack your car full and drive wherever he goes. or pay to move your stuff. You can always buy cheap stuff when you get there. I would start saving either way! Remember every little dime helps when it comes to this. So if you go to school or work start taking a sandwhich (I know its boring and plain but I ate PB&J for over half of my husbands A school and BC but thats the only way I could afford to visit him either time!) It saves sooo much! When you go out get water instead of soda (if you dont already) I coupon. I have saved 100$ in a month and I dont even do it all the time. just for stuff I need especially toiletries and household stuff I might need and I look for stuff I spend money on all the time when it goes on sale and stock up. Ramen noodles are also cheap and if you buy a thing of seasoning you can spice em up a little. I would def say start saving!!!! You will need the money either way! Especially for deposit, first month rent, gas, etc. Good luck girly!

Is he going undes? or are they giving him a new rate?

Also even those his class is only 3 weeks he will be there a little longer because of wait time, but the wait is very short for APAC (thats what they call undese down here) Undes normally get orders to a ship or squadron while in bootcamp so he will know where he is going by graduation weekend, so even if you married while he is in pcola it would be to late to be on his orders (so navy wont move you) But you will begin receiving BAH and health care and other benefits.

Did he have to put in any waivers to get into Navy? if so that can keep him from being stationed overseas. If you had "moral" waivers to get in (moral waivers - any kind of ticket, or charge, etc) they wont station you overseas for your first tour

thank you so much for all the advice!! i'm incredibly fortunate because i'm living at home with no college debt, my car paid off and i have a full time teaching job which means i'm saving practically allll of my money :) i won't be joining him until my contract is up this year but we will be getting married on paper as soon as possible for health care etc. he didn't need any waivers but he almost had to for tickets and he said he had to fill out extra forms because of the ADHD. even though it might be the case with us, the whole wish list thing was a little hope and encouraging either way...and i'm already couponing! are either of you undes wives?

well that really is helpful!!! :) and w2g saving that will help sooo much! I love couponing! I am not but my husbands friend from bootcamp was undes so I do know a wife of an undes if you have any questions she is on my profile I think. her name is Magan :) I hope he get to do a wish list bc I know that would be sooo helpful for you!

There's a good explanation of undes in the forums, under Misperceptions.  It isn't all bad, opens up a lot of opportunity.

 

With a three week training period, he probably won't get to come home on leave before he reports. That privilege is usually attached to A schools.   Mark that as a huge "maybe" and don't hang any plans on it. (One of these days I'll have cheerful information, sorry)

 

Wish list ... the sailor slang is "dream sheet".   I think for an undes, it isn't hard to fulfill their request if they're asking for one of the big bases such as Norfolk or San Diego.  I know for a sailor with a specific school and NEC (which is what you earn in C school), you get sent where the jobs are.  Undes doesn't have a specific job, so they're easier to place.

its ok! i know things are all ifs, ands, buts and maybes with the Navy but i'm hoping it is the case because they told him to tell his family to expect to see him either Thanksgiving or Christmas depending on whe he classes up and then has to report. his top two choice of bases are in Norfolk so maybe we'll get lucky :) i've been doing lots of research on undes and you're right..it isn't all bad. in fact there are a lot of great stories. he is definitely an easy going roll with the punches guy so i'm sure he'll be fine and i'm trusting that there is a reason for this. my mom always says that blessings often come wrapped in disguise so we shall see! i'll be sure to keep everyone updated and i want you all to know i really appreciate your information and support.
