Hi all,

I've been hanging around this place for a couple of years, but just joined this group.  After being dropped by both USNA and NROTC in April of 2010, DS is a college programmer at the University of Idaho.  We are feeling the full force of the scholarship crunch--inspite of being #1 in his class with a Tier 1 major and 3.86 GPA, he STILL does not have a scholarship as a Sophomore.  Sigh...it's frustrating.  But, nevertheless, he LOVES his unit and all that goes with it.  It's interesting to hear him share about experiences that I know were not really that pleasant, yet he does so with a smile on his face.  It's wonderful to see him happy and in his element.

There are some truly FUN aspects of NROTC though.  His first trip to the Navy Ball at the end of last October was reportedly 'the absolute BEST time of my life'.  He loved getting dressed up in his dress blues, loved being on the 'cake cutting team', loved the pomp and circumstance...oh and the meal and dancing were great too!

Anyone have any stories to share about the Navy Ball...or any other "fun" NROTC stuff??

I actually got to attend the ball with my husband, my daughter and her boyfriend last year.  The pomp and circumstance of all the military ritual was awesome to see.  But the greatest thing was seeing all those young men and women all dressed up in their blues dancing and laughing and having a great time.  Usually when they are in those uniforms, they have to be so serious and careful of how they act.  They really looked like a bunch of college kids at a fun dance.  This year, we will not be going, but the ball is being held at a casino.  My daughter will turn 21 next week and is really looking forward to be able to enjoy that!

What a fantastic photo!!  And how cool that you were able to attend too.  Thanks for sharing!

That's awesome!!  My son is also the color guard commander in his unit, but our school, especially in football is not even close to the level of play/prestige you are talking about.  I'm sure you are very proud!

And color guard was the one thing my daughter did not like.  She was so happy that it was only required in her freshman year.  She also doesn't love all the running, for morning PT, but does like the evening swim PT.   I'm not sure if it's because she doesn't have to get up early or if she just prefers swimming to running!
My husbands NROTC has a annual Flag foot ball game against the Army ROTC. Which is very fun to go watch.  I'm sure most schools don't do this but my husband enjoyed it very much .
my daughter is looking forward to the ball, except she is having a terrible time finding a date. So many of the guys & gals pair up romantically or belong to the party crowd (which she is FAR from involved in) so she's kinda left out. I wish I could help her but, what's a mom to do?

Yes, that is a hard thing.  DS is not into partying at all...and is so wrapped up in trying to give 100% to both NROTC and school that he doesn't have much time for socializing.  Last year, he took a girl who was a friend of one of the females in the unit.  This year, he is going with his roommate's girlfriend's roommate.  They are driving 10 hours to attend.  He's never met her. Should be interesting...

kmaidaho -- hope your ds's Ball works out better than our ds's ball did last spring lol

He knew his date [he had huge crush, i think], but did not know the friend she brought for another MIDN.  The guys got a hotel room for the girls cuz they drove 5 hours to come to the Ball.  The girls were LATE, wouldn't dance & left [went to one of the girls homes in Chicago] before the Ball was over -- blowing off the very nice hotel room the boys had already paid for for them. I never quite figured out why the girls even agreed to go in the first place.

Guys made the best of it -- they stayed in the hotel instead & enjoyed the luxury.

This year??  DS isn't taking a date!!  Perhaps i'll get a dance with him :]   DD invited us to come to Ball since she is a senior.  Can't wait!!

Lori4629 --

DD took an acquaintance Army ROTC guy to her freshman Ball.  Worked out pretty well... he was respectful, understood protocol & authority, etc.  She barely knew him before that, but they had a good time.

Just a thought

Her dad was Air Force, so I've tried to get her to ask the Air Force guys (Auburn has multi service ROTCs). She interacts with some of them while they do flag detail before the home football games, but she is so shy or afraid of rejection that she bristles at the very notion of asking someone. She put her brother's name on the RSVP and that bought her an extra 3 weeks to find a date but I know she's frustrated. I'm just trying to encourage her but it frustrated me when she won't go out of her comfort zone and talk to the people who could help her. Sure hope they all end up having a good time though!

Taryn's freshman year she asked an enlisted guy to go with her.  They had known each other since they were both in Sea Cadets together.  She took a lot of ribbing from others in her unit about bringing him.  But they had fun anyway.  Last year she had a boyfriend who is non-military.  That worked out great...he is still in the picture so will be her date again this year.
