Hey all :) The love of my life graduates from bootcamp Nov 4th and I was just wondering what would be a good graduation gift for him. If I do get him a gift, are they able to take anything back with them to A school or do we have to just send it to them later on?

Thanks guys!!!

They can have almost anything at A school, they just can't take it back to RTC that night.  You'd have to give it to them at the airport if they're flying out. If they're checking into Great Lakes for A school, they can have it right away.

Remember, their space is very limited, and they have to carry whatever you give them.  Also, the barracks have rules about what they can and can't have.

A watch is good, but it has to meet uniform regulations.

He can have a laptop, but that's not something to surprise a guy with, they get all techy and like to choose their own.

A bible or religious medallion is nice if they're religious.

Long jonhs which can go under their uniform if they're staying in Great Lakes (romantic, huh?)

Some say Navy coins, but buying them is sort of like cheating.  That's more for A school graduation when he earns his rate.

I gave my nephew a donation to the USO for Christmas last year! He's on a sub, zero room for things.

Gift cards are good, especially to the fast food places on base.

But do not give them civilian clothes, knick-knacks, quilts (some barracks don't allow personal bedding), photo albums or digital frames (put it all on a flashdrive), stuffed animals, flowers, books, or "stuff".  Just hugging you in person is often gift enough.

One word about phones... if they get orders overseas, such as to Japan, American phones don't work there!  So if your sailor wants to go phone shopping, remind them they don't need anything super until they find out their orders. Of course, if they have a long school (like AECF or nuke), then a nice phone is okay.
I thought about sending him a gold pocket watch from thingsremembered.com with special engraving on it...Is that okay to send him or give to him at graduation?

That would be a nice gift!  He will have to be careful about locking it up when it isn't in his pocket, sadly there is a lot of theft in the barracks and on ships.

Things Remembered is NOT the cheapest place to get such things.  Shop around a bit online.  My nephew wanted an engraved flask, Things Remembered would have charged an arm and a leg ($30 for the flask, $9 to set up the engraving, $3 a LETTER after the first few letters, would have been over $75).  I found a better flask for under $30 with free engraving on eFlasks.com.

Here's one place, just to compare:
