My son is leaving for boot camp on 10/27/11.  I just read about putting a phone card in his wallet (great idea).  Are there other people who have someone leaving on that date, too?  Are there any other good, last-minute tips?   Thank you!   Barb

My daughter left yesterday I was able to talk to her a few times while she was at O'Hare airport waiting for the bus to pick them up. All I have to say is letting her go was the hardest thing that I have had to do. I cried all the way home from MEPS. She is my only child and the most we have been apart from eachother is 2 weeks, but I know she will be ok she is a strong girl and I know this is good for her and I am so very proud it take a lot of courage for her to do what she is doing. Now I just have to wait 3 weeks to hear her voice again. I am looking forward to any mail I get from her. I have already started on letters to send her. It is just so hard and the crying comes and goes one min I am fine and the next I am sobbing, but I know I am more sad for me.

I know how you feel.  The longest I have ever went without talking to my daughter is 48 hours.  She  also left yesterday.  We raise them to be strong and independent, and then when they are, it is the hardest thing ever.  We just have to know they will be OK, are in a good place, and are building thier future.  As for the sobbing, I am right there with you!
Ruth maybe our daughters will be friends. I just can't stop thinking about her. I know my husband is so supporting right now, but I think I may be driving him nuts talking about her.every 5 mins I know he misses het to, but the bond between mother & child is so different

They just might be.  The only thing that keeps me sane is that I know she is well taken care of right now.  At least I didn't have to be worried about her driving in the snow yesterday.  My husband is just very quiet.  She is our youngest and a daddies girl.  It is nice to have this forum to talk to other Moms who are going through the same thing.

Natalies mom...i am with you on that. My son called me when he landed, I just wanted to reach through the phone and hug him! As moms the hardest thing is to let go, I still have two sons a daughter n grandson to keep me busy. The sobs definitely come in waves ....eventually I'll summon the courage to step into his room...its the same feeling I had when my daughter moved out, now shes married with a 2 year old. I'll pray every day for all our sons n daughters.
jnrlopez, I know what you mean about going into their bedroom. I have not mustard up going into my daughters bedroom yet, but she did not leave it as clean as I would like, so I will at some point get in there and get it to my liking........I just miss her so much and it only has been a few days. My husband is being so understanding with this all. I just need to get pass the missing so much which I know it will not go away completley
My husband has also been supportive, and I know time will help us miss them less. BUT, I'm sure once that phone call comes again.. .i know I'll fall apart again. As for his room, it was pretty clean (from the naked eye) Lol....maybe I'll find penicillin? Humor keeps me from crying...
I received my 10 sec call, he said "mom, three things 1. Next, call in 3 weeks, 2. Be on the lookout for the box, 3. I'll write as soon as I can". I love you n dad, bye.. .click. Wow, what a, feeling.
Got the same call and somehow it made me feel a little better.  At least I know she will be safe.

Aaaaw this makes me cry just thinking about all you guys going through this brings all those memories straight back to the front of my mind. All I can say is hold on tight the kid in the box is hard, the form letter is a blessing it gives lots of information and the all important PIR (graduation) date. And the going in the room well that's not easy at all. I had a real hard time with my younger son going in his brothers room to play the Xbox so I had to move it out of there, I couldn't stand seeing his brother in there and him not being there :-( This website is a blessing and the support is marvelous. Know that all the feelings and tears are normal and though they try friends and family just don't understand. Join your PIR groups as soon as you get the information you will make friends there that can last a lifetime. My son left in June and he was injured so he was set back and didn't PIR until mid September. Bless each and every one of you and Welcome Aboard.

P.S. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} And it does get easier because once they get to their A schools they get their phones and computers back and if you live close enough after a few weeks they can have overnight liberty. YEAH!!!!

I forgot to send a phone card with my son.  :(

Once I receive his mailing address could I mail one to him?

I was told we can send calling cards and stamps if they need them.  Just activiate it before you send it.
