My daughter left for BC October 24th.,Her PIR should be around mid December. I keep hearing horror stories about the weather in Great Lakes. Has anybody been there in December?

I have seen -50 up here in Dec..and I have also seen up to 10 foot snow drifts...  and everywhere in between!

Something to keep in mind the bases do NOT shut down!  Even if the planes can't get in PIR will go on!  So recommend you plan to be up here early as the airports do shut down!

All the farmers are saying this is going to be a bad winter!

I remember flying in to O'Hare years ago and it was -30 and the baggage guys could only be out side like 10 minutes at a time. Brutal winters for sure.

If you do end up not being able to drive, you can take the tram or the taxi from the airport. But like they said, the airports do shut down.  They did for 2 days while I was up there. It was horrible. So you might also want to consider buying your tickets closer to the PIR date, to see if you want to pick a different airport.

Also, waiting to buy the tickets is a good idea due to recruits, who on occasion, get set back on their PIR dates. (Sickness, injury, not passing a test, etc).

I am definitely waiting till the last minute to purchase my ticket!!! Thanks to all the veteran moms. I am truely obsessed with this website.  It's really the only thing holding me together right now!!!

I am also anxious about the weather!!! I'll be flying into Milwaukee Airport (I understand the fairs and rentals are less expensive there vs O'Hare). Having lived in North Carolina since '88, I'm not experienced in driving in snow, so I'm seriously considering a taxi or tram, but, I don't know where to start! I have yet to receive the letter telling me my son's division and grad date, but he shipped out 10/26 so it will be in December.

Wonder if there are any other single moms flying out that might be needing to cut costs and might have suggestions?

Sorry to ramble and not make alot of sense; I won't be 'right' until I hear from my son.

Leilla, Where are you flying from?  And how far is the Milwaukee Airport from the Naval Base?
I'll be flying from Charlotte, and from what I've read, Milwaukee is about 50 miles from base; about 15 miles further than O'Hare.
I had checked prices for Greensboro, but, they cost more. I would have preferred to drive there vs Charlotte, but, the $$ matters.
Yeah it's a 14 hour drive but we never know what kind of weather we might run into!! I live in Burlington NC and I found a flight from RDU to ORD round trip for 250.00. But I would have to purchase 2 tickets, 1 for me and 1 for my 8 year old son.
If we were not talking about winter months, I would consider driving, but, no way will I think of driving the 800+ miles! I found tickets from travelocity (haven't purchased anything yet) non stop $275; 1 stop $200. If the changeover isn't too brief, I will do that, but, I'm not a fast walker and to lessen anxiety, I'd rather a nonstop. I'm worried about making it financially, and I only have myself to worry about; it's going to be more costly for you with your young son traveling with you; I shouldn't be whining :-)
LOL!!!!! Yeah you right??? Maybe your SR will help you with the flight?  When we went to San Antonio for my son's graduation he paid for my rental car.
If you do not know how to drive in the snow and ice, I would recommend you NOT drive!  One PIR last year, someone going to PIR hit my car with a rental car.  My car just had a little dent...but the rental car had a really big dent...I see it all the time during PIR in the winter time, of people going to PIR getting into accidents.  Local's know to stay away from that road as we know you all can't drive in the snow, lol!  I was over there as I was going to the RTC base for a meeting.  Otherwie I would have not been near that base.
