Hey guys! My boyfriend will be making his way home soon from deployment and I couldn't be more excited! Has anybody been to a homecoming in Norfolk? I was wondering how bad the traffic may be that day and if there is sufficient parking? Also, how early did you get on base before the ship arrived? This is the ship's very first homecoming so I have no idea what to expect. Thanks :)

i checked google maps and there are a lot of parking spaces within walking distance...however i have also heard that the crowd will be huge.  i also was told to arrive 2 hours before the ship's arrival.  are you attending the FRG homecoming event the night before?

What happens if you can't make the FRG? I'll be on a Tiger Cruise, other family members are attending homecoming but may not make it to Norfolk in time for the meeting.

Ken-call the FRG and tell them your situation.

Gwen Jordan 757-342-8118

there is a special decal to print on your computer that is supposed to expedite your family's entrance onto the base.

i am praying that we make in time too....coming from southwest corner of Tennessee!

Connie,

Thanks, but my son is on the USS ANZIO. He sent me a name/number for more info, I called and left a message, haven't heard back yet.

We have 2 carloads of relatives driving to Norfolk plus one person flying in. It's at least a 9 hour drive from home, probably more taking traffic into consideration. I'm driving to Norfolk a few days before and flying out to meet the ship for the Tiger Cruise. If I leave my car at the airport, the person flying in may be able to get to our FRG meeting the night before . . . if their flight is delayed, I don't know??

It's tough for me because I'm usually the one to handle the arrangements and I'll be on the ship. It would be great if that info was available online and we could print out a pass. The ship's Family Web site doesn't have any current info.

ruh rho Mr. Ken...gave you wrong info and i am sorry....i just assumed you Sailor was on the Bush!!

KEEP CALLING THE NUMBER YOUR SON SENT!!  surely to goodness they will answer!  can you send them a text?

oh my goodness i know what you mean on being the one to always handle arrangements...i would GLADLY give up that job!  this one is about to do me in....i have a child in a wheelchair and an 85 yr. old Momma in our group....talk about "complications"!!  it is going to take TWO days for us to make it to Norfolk.

Homecomings are great!  Timing depends on the size of the ship.  We arrived about 2 hours before the ship was expected.  My daughter's ship was the last of 5 ships to come home that day.  She was on a destroyer so there were maybe 300 people on board, including those on the tiger cruise.  We were leaving base about 1.5 hours after the ship docked and the carrier that was the first to dock that day was still unloading!  All of the people on base we encountered were extremely helpful and there were plenty of signs showing the way.  Make sure you are dressed for the walk and the weather.  It can be breezy along the piers.

The ship is an aircraft carrier so I imagine there wll be hundreds of people there. Very happy to hear there are plenty of signs and helpful people showing the way. I've been on base a couple times before but never paid a bit of attention to the parking lol. I'm hoping to get there as early as I can. I work third shift so the day before homecoming ill be sleeping all day. The plan was for me to go to norfolk the night before but i don't think ill be able to make it half asleep lol. I'm only 3.5 hours away so it shouldnt be too bad if I leave very early the day of...I hope!

Connie- i wanted to go to the frg meeting but i don't think i will be able to make it unfortunetly :(

NavySweetheart-honestly i am not sure we will even make it on time to the gathering on Friday night.  and since we will have been traveling all day long i am sure we will look pretty darn "road weary".  i will need to get my family settled into the Lodge as soon as i can so they can rest up for the homecoming.  hope to meet you on the Pier....i will be easy to spot....look for my kid in the wheelchair!!!  come meet Sailor's Grandmaw!!!

Aww yes, I most definitely can understand that. In fact, my dad used to live in Memphis, now he lives about 15-30 minutes south in Olive Branch, MS. I made the drive before so I know how exhausting it is. Yes, the homecoming is going to be a very busy day so you should definitely rest up, especially since you're responsible for other people that day too! I would love to meet you too! We will definitely have to look out for each other, I'll be the very short, tiny girl wearing a navy blue peacoat and brown boots, haha. I can't wait!

okie dokie i will be on the lookout for teeny girl waiting on her Sailor...oh wait....there should be hundreds of them....hehehehe

oh yes Olive Branch just a stone's throw....literally straight down the road from us. we are actually in Germantown, Tn a suburb of Memphis.  do you come back to this area often to see your Dad?

Awesome, haha! Yes, I do remember riding through Germantown one day when he took me to see his old house in Memphis. When I made the drive from VA to MS I actually got car sick and that as never happened to me before, I just can't handle that drive, lol. No, I don't come often...I try to visit at least once a year and then he comes to VA (Danville...about 3 1/2 hours west of Norfolk) to visit all of us. The last time I was there was summer 2010 and had a blast. Not much to do in olive branch, but lots in the surrounding area, especially Memphis....loved it all minus the humidity when i was there in July, haha

oh so Va. is your home!! i thought you were there for your Sailor!!  how lucky for you to be so close to your Sailor!!!
