OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I was reading the info on Navy Housing at GL do they allow dogs or do you have to go off base if you have a dog.

Hi there! Brand new to the military life except for my brother-in-law who is a nuc on a sub. My DH just got his job last week for AECF and goes to Great Lakes in January. I'm a teacher and plan to join him around June/July (if I'm allowed... which I think I am, just not right away).
I am diving into all the messages board and learning a lot. I think I understand the boot camp/ graduation aspects (at least what I need to for now!), next is the ABCDEFGHI.... schools (ok, I'm just kidding, but the school part get confusing.) There is just SO much information its a bit overwhelming. I'm sure I have questons about EVERYTHING, I just don't know what they are yet.Plus, since so much is about what the navy needs, I'm sure the maority of my questions will have an answer like "when it's time..." or "who knows".
One BIG piece of the puzzle, is even though we are married legally, we were/are planning to do the big white wedding in October on a Saturday (in Florida, where we live now.) My HOPE (I know, it's just a hope) is that he will be in school and be able to fly down on Friday. Then fly back up on Sunday. Crazy? Yes. Doable? I'm not sure...
Anyways, looking for friends, advice, ideas, word of encouragement, etc. and this site has been BY FAR the most helpful, informative, and inspirational one yet. So thanks for that!

I suggest having the wedding.during the holiday weekend in October(I think its Columbus day). Which ever holiday it is there is no school that Monday.

They cannot go more than 300 miles from the base without having leave papers in hand. In general, students in A school are never granted leave, (the exception being during the holiday stand down). He can get into real trouble if he flies out without permission. He can ask about an "out of bounds" special request chit, but those are rarely approved at Great Lakes.
This is the very reason so many brides fly to where the sailor is to marry during A school and have to skip the big white wedding. Simply, students aren't allowed to fly home. Getting married is not important enough to the Navy.

Anit-M is right - my husband finished FC A-school over the summer and we're just about to move from Great Lakes to his C-school and while they're in ATT or A-school pretty much the only thing they'll let you go outside the 300 mile limit for is an emergency or paternity leave. But if your husband is shipping to boot in January, there's a chance he could be done with A-school before October - especially if he gets FC because their's is a little shorter than ET. That's if he's not on hold in between Indoc, ATT, and A-school. The holds between classes over the last year have been minimal or non-existent but that can change anytime. So if he was done with A-school by October and just waiting around on hold for orders, then he could probably get the leave approved...but it's only a probably. And you don't know when you'll get orders after he finishes A-school, it could be a few weeks or it could be a few months....so honestly I would say since you're already technically married (so you're eligible for all the Navy benefits and stuff), if you're wanting to do a real wedding, you should probably wait until after he gets done with his A and C schools before you try and plan it. I know that's not what you want to hear but it would be majorly disappointing to put all the effort and planning that goes into a traditional wedding, and then have something funky happen and your husband not be able to leave and be there...

The worst feeling is when they have leave approved and are recalled before they can get on a plane home. This wouldn't happen in A school, but if he is on hold waiting for orders, it all gets very iffy.

thank you both so much for the info! We haven't put down much $ yet, knowing things change. We go in tomorrow to talk to his recruiter for some of my questions regarding Everything and I worry they'll promise us the moon. I don't do well with "maybe"s and "possibilities" because I stress until it happens! So if I could plan it in Chicago now, I'd rather! Thank you again!!

Stress about maybes? LOL, learn some deep relaxation meditation techniques now.
Your recruiter might not know the current details of leave and liberty at Great Lakes if that's not where he went to his A school, and unless he keeps up. On this site, the ladies and moms share info as it is updated. Always double check here until you get a link or a regulation online. Great Lakes Training Command has a FB page, I suggest finding it, their Public Affairs point person takes the time to answer questions.
I was a sailor and I went to school in Great Lakes, and I had to learn about all the changes. They're far stricter than when I was there.

are there any DEFINITE days that there is no school (may it be A school or not)? Labor Day weekend? Christmas Eve? Day? I am working on a 24 hour time period I could plan on. Thanks for the help, even if its not pretty. :-)

There are several long weekends, and a lot of them they get friday AND monday off, which is awesome...but you will have no idea what duty section he will be in until he's on his school ship, so even if there's a long weekend he could still have duty in the middle of it...
Oh and there's also christmas stand down, dates are a little different each year this year it's from Dec 16th-Jan 2nd. During that the schools shutdown so if they want to take leave they can, usually with no problem. If they stay through it they still have to stand duty though... -

Hi my husband is in bootcamp at the moment and i have a billion in one ?'s like if the navy moves you or if you have to move urself? and how do you get on the base housing list and how long do you have to wait to get housing etc... can someone please help me if you know ne of this information plz! I feel a little over my head at the moment and have a 3 yr old and 7 year old and this is the first time EVER my husband has been away...its been a little rough not knowing ne thing...
