My son is going to GC after boot. He just went in on Nov 15th, 2011

Hi gang of proud moms! My son, Talon, will be heading to GC after Boot Camp. Thank God my Dad is nearby in Bluffton, Sc. It's only about 2 hours from there. Should anyone have an emergency, and need a surrogate Grandpa, just let me know. He adores my son, his "Little Man" and I am sure would be glad to offer assistance, a hot meal or just a place to feel welcome to any of your kids as well. He has always been the "goto guy" for my son. He is a good, Christian man, very pro military and likely the coolest Grandpa in the world!

Take care and God bless you all !

Hi and welcome!! My son did PIR 11/4. He is an MM and right now is in indoc waiting for the next classes to start, it should be either the last week of November or the first week in December. Hang in there - I think basic is the hardest part for the family because those letters don't come anywhere near often enough!!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I am writing him everyday. I hope the letters from home keep him going. When you say indoc, what does that mean? I'm so new and haven't heard the terminology much yet.

I am clinging to my cell too,  just in case he happens to get a call. I'm starting to feel like the cell phone nazi!!! Everybody grab your phone, in case Tal callls!!!!!!!! LOL

I talk to my son everyday since he got to GC. I love being able to be in contact with him since there was only snail mail while in boot camp. He is a MM and is indoc too. He said he startes school next Monday. I'm glad, too much time off is not always a good thing.

Indoc is when they are waiting for a new class to start. They do basic work during the day but have free time evenings and weekends. Most of the people who finished boot camp with my son started classes this week (with briefings all last week), but some of them have to wait for the next class - which is hopefully next Monday.

I agree JC's mom - too much time off isn't a good thing. Too much time on their hands gives them time to get a little homesick, and i worry that mine at least will get restless and get himself into trouble!!

Ok, cool. Thank you, makes sense. Do you know if they have the weekend off after Grad? Or is that also up in the air til it happens??????

I agree from you all, idle time might make them homesick??

I love to hear from you all, keepem coming!!

God Bless,

Shelly

My son is also in BC as of 11/15 and headed to GC after 1/20/12 as an MM.  From what I have read, no time off after PIR, just Friday and whatever time you spend with your sailor at the airport on Saturday.  What is your son's PIR date?

After PIR they only get Friday afternoon (and while that's usually right its not completely guaranteed) if they are going to Great Lakes. They if you want you can go to the airport and wait there with them until the plane leaves. My son went to Great Lakes in November and we had him Friday after PIR until 8 (but he wanted to be back at 7 just to make sure he wasn't late. We went to the airport at 5 in the morning and stayed with him until around 7 his plane was leaving around 8 but he wanted to talk to the guys and had his phone to talk and text his friends at home so we left when he went past the security check point but you can go past and wait at the gate with them if you want to. just make sure that you have id if you're planning on going to the gate. My daughter forgot hers and was able to get her pass only because she was underage (i think the cutoff is 15)

Bless your heart for that sweet offer.  My son was in BC last December so I know what you're going through.  It about killed me not having him home for Christmas.  Whenever I suspected I might get a phone call I kept my cell phone in my bra!  I never missed a call!!

My son is also going to GC after Boot Camp.  He left on 12/13 for basic training.  Perhaps they will be in the same class for A school.  We live about 4 hours from GC so I am hoping to visit a lot.

Hi Ladies.  My son is an MM and got to GC last year on Nov. 10.  He finished A school in March, started Power school at the end of April, and graduated PS on Oct. 7.  he is now on grad hold and recovering from ankle surgery.  Be sure to ask any questions you have.  We are all here to help each other.
