Happy New Year Everyone! Glad to hear about all the letters.  Yay! So happy for all of you!  I love hearing about everyone's letters, because they help to paint a complete picture of what's going on there.

Today your recruits are probably getting their first tastes of a real Chicago Winter. While our winter has been unseasonable mild up to this point (I'm not complaining...) Old man winter rolled in with a vengence last night. The wind is awful and light snow is whipping around. The internet says it's 32 degrees here. Don't believe them! With 45 mile an hour gusts, the windchill is more like 18 degrees. Brrr.... They don't call Chicago the Windy City for nothing! --(In acutality, the term  "windy" originally meant the excessive talk by our Chicago politicians, but most people now a days use it to refer to our weather.:) If the SRs are outside anytime over the next few days, and I;m sure they will be, they'll probably be complaining about our lovely January weather in their upcoming letters.

BTW--my daughter mentioned in her last letter that she is one of the "sticks" and will probably be twirling  flags on the starboard side of the 066 division during PIR. I may not be able to pick her out, but at last I know where to look!

Suz ~ It's so cool that you are in the area and can give us these real-time weather updates.  It's kind of like you are our "room mother" watching out for our kids that are so far from us! Thanks!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful New Year so far! I know we will all be sitting by our phones this week!

Hi! Everyone! Tell me did I understand correctly that I can send my SR a big manila envelope? I'd like to include a couple of self addressed envelopes. It's 8 x 10 I think. Thanks

I don't think there are any restrictions on envelope size - but I'm not sure. I think packages are the only no-no. Have you tried searching it on the site to see if anyone else has asked/answered the question in the past?

Yes I know I read the part about the manila envelope somewhere but just to clarify I looked for it today and can't figure out where I read it. There are so many forums and blogs it's hard for me to go back and find it. I guess I'll just send it. It's that cute questionare and I want to include a self addressed stamped envelope. I read that some moms sent their recruits manila envelopes so that they could return the letters they received for safe keeping. I guess I'm a little paranoid! I don't want to send him anything that will cause him issues! Thank You Hope!

I sent my daughter a 6X9 envelope last week that was pretty thick but I wrote on the outside what what in it. "Official college transcript, family letters, news articles, stamps, photos." They probably had my daughter open it in front of them, just to make sure I wasn't sending candy bars. I read that you'll be fine, as long as you identify the contents.

My daughter requested that I send her some more stationery, but to make sure it wasn't  too bulky or big. She said she was running out of room in her personal drawer. So this week I am also sending her a postage paid priority mail envelope in case she wants to send any of her mail home. I'm sure she'll opt to keep the boyfriend letters:)

Great! Thank you suz! i think I will do the same!

So I have noticed a lot of the other Ship/Divisions are choosing colors and then planning on wearing scarves in the designated color to PIR to recognize each other, show support, etc.  The colors "taken" by other groups so far are red, royal blue, navy blue, yellow and purple as far as I can tell. Are we interested in doing that? We would have to decide on a color and then post it so no one else uses the color for the same thing. Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be white if we do it - goes with anything and should "pop" in a crowd.

I'm game! I was thinking of gold but might be hard to find, white might be okay! I was thinking if you wear white near your face it will show your make up. Or green even!

I think you are right about gold being hard to find. I would probably wear it as a winter scarf with my coat, just kinda draped over my shoulders indoors for PIR, so the makeup thing wouldn't be an issue for me. Basic colors left are green, white, black or grey. Any other opinions from the group? Green or white would be easiest to spot, but grey might be nice too.

I think our recruits will be wearing dress blues. My oldest wore his dress whites at PIR, but I think the winter groups wear their blues.
