The USN will NOT ship a car in the USA...if you want it moved you have to drive it or you pay out of your pocket to ship it.

Angie a little off topic but I have a random question about moving I was hoping you might know the answer. I am moving to Virginia in a month and the drive from where I am is about 22 hours. Well with a large dog coming with me and my older dog it would be easier to just drive straight through instead of stopping for the night do you know how I would go about getting money for that? Just wait til I get there and get reimbursed or tell them I am going get money upfront and then they would take what I didnt spend? TIA

SNmouse is right...they decide how many miles you can go in an 8 hour day and will pay 80% up front (if the Sailor requests the money).

I traveled from CA to WI with a large dog and you would be supprised how many places do allow dogs.  At the rest stops I would pick up those free hotel papers and call a few...I always found a place to stay with me and the dog (mind you she was large...an Akita, almost 100lbs)  Also Akita's are normally on the nonagressive breed dogs (which she wasn't an agressive dog) and they still let us stay at the places.

I would NOT recommmend driving straight through, you should stop and rest to make sure you get there safely!

My sailor will definitely be getting that money ;) lol I already told him that we need the money. We had to pay our way to Washington and back bc the Navy wouldnt due to our circumstances. I was told if we dont use all the money they take it back from us.. which I understand I would jsut want to know beforehand. I am going to be googling places that would let me have large dogs I am mostly worried about having two and not having a kennel to crate my larger dog bc the Navy is moving it ahead of us.

The driving situation will depend most on who can drive with me. If its my Dad or my friend then we will have to go straight through bc of vacation contraints they only have so much time they can take off. Especially my Dad at this time of year. lol Plus my husnband and I just drove 34 hours straight from WA to OK lol now anything less feels like a walk in the park ;) lol but I would prefer to be able to stop just will depend on who I can get to go with me. If my other friend goes she is a school teacher so she will have the whole week off either way. I am a planner as much as I can be with the Navy. I have multiple plans ;) lol and each plan has a sub plan and they are all interchangeable. lol I am the ultimate control freak haha.

If you're moving from inconus to an inconus duty station, they won't ship the car.  They will, however, pay you so much for gas per mile, and they will pay you a per diem rate per person for every day of travel.  The Navy will determine how many miles it is (which may or may not match your "actual" miles traveled, they determine it from where you're supposed to be officially to where your new duty station is).  They will also determine your per diem rate based on how many days they think you should be traveling, based on the distance (again, this may or may not match how many days you actually take - some take less and can make a bit of money from it, some choose to take longer and pay out of pocket, some travel "spot on" what the Navy says...).

I don't know if they do this going to your first duty station coming out of A school or not (or if that's even the situation you all are in), but your Sailor can also put in for advance pay, where they will give him a percentage of the amount they anticipate you all getting to do this move.

According to the DFAS site, the current rate of Milage in Lieu of Transportation rate is 23 cents per mile.  They say that you should be able to travel 350 miles per day (if the distance is 400 miles or less, they will only give you one day though).  I'm not sure what the per diem rates are (as far as actual, exact dollar amounts, because that can vary, but your Sailor should be able to find this out from PSD).  However, whatever rate they determine, he will get full per diem, you (and any child over 12) will get 3/4 per diem (unless you are traveling separately...) and any kids under 12 will get 1/2 per diem. Even if you guys are in separate cars, they will consider you traveling "together".

Now - this is VERY IMPORTANT - if the car is not in your name or his name, they will NOT pay this.  The car HAS to be officially yours, or officially leased to you under a long term lease.  Also, he will not be able to register it on base if the car isn't in your or his name.  I strongly encourage you to get the car switched over to your name as soon as you can.

Thanks to all the ladies who were patient with me and took the time to explain everything to me. Like I said I am new to this and I have heard so many things from recruiters, instructors, housing etc. So I came here for some advice! I greatly appreciate you ladies! Thanks again!

Something to think about anytime someone says something to you (recruiters, instructor's, housing office, etc...) TELL Them you want to see an instuction.  Everything in the USN has an insturction
