So the form letter FINALLY came today and now we know that our loved ones have a PIR date of 3/16. Anyone else out there? I need to start looking at hotels and plane tickets. I was trying to hold off until we had the actual date.

Hey Div 89ers!  Got the first real letter today. WOOHOO!  SR says it's a mixed bag of feelings so far, but the food is great--ha-ha. (What does that say about my cooking?  Wait...don't answer that.) Made reservations for the Springhill Suites in Waukegan for a 2Queen with sofa sleeper for $99 plus tax.  Called the hotel directly.  This place has the highest customer reviews on priceline for the area hotels (but don't book there since their price is $139).  Hope to meet some of you at PIR.  Hang in there...3/16 is coming!

I received a real letter from my SR in the mail today!  It was so good to hear from him, to see his handwriting.  He put Ship 03 Div 089 on the return address, but I have not received the form letter.  Isn't that strange?

I am surprised his letter beat the form letter. But, either way, now you have his mailing address so you can start sending him some encouraging words from the home front! I kind of laughed when we got his mail today because I realized how far away we are from the "old days" when people would actually correspond through the mail. And if I think it is odd, I can only imagine how our kids feel because they have never known a time before the Internet and email and texting. Handwriting a letter must be surreal for them.

I am glad you finally got your letter.

His girlfriend told me that she also received a personal letter yesterday, plus graduation information that she would give me on Sunday.  I think that is the form letter.  She received his box last week, because my son thought it would be easier on me.  Yes, a handwritten letter is surreal.

Mason, Tx is so far off the beaten path that all my letters showed up today. There were 10 to his girlfriend, 3 for me ( I know where I rank), 1 for his dad and 1 for his sister. He doesn't sound as homesick as I thought he would be. He is not fond of the food but doesn't thnk PT is all that bad. He said he did not like the "P" days. I am sure he was having a hard time staying awake. As long as he is active he is ok, but if he gets still, it doesn't take long, especially with being short of sleep anyway. But overall he sounded good. I feel better now

Two letters in the mail today! Both extemely short and to the point. My son, Colin, is in the "USS Hopper" compartment. Are any of your sons in that one too?  I say "sons" because I am assuming that they are not co-ed, but maybe they have different floors for the females and males; I just don't know. Anyway, a banner day here with the two letters. I am going to try to write him again tomorrow so he will get a constant stream of letters from home. Maybe I will get really ambitious and make some cards to throw in the mail too.

Got to see a pic of my son on RTC facebook page.  @ Aggiemom: my son is also on the hopper!

lala, can you link the photo here?  I'm always watching RTC FB page.

Hi Everyone,

well... We finally received the form letter along w/a letter yesterday. He said all is going well. My son is also on the Hopper. We've decided to leave on Wednesday and drive. Should take about 12 hours. I've got alot of family in the area to visit. I am soooo excited!

Good to know! I just got in from work and am going to put aside all of the paperwork and  house stuff I SHOULD work on to make him a card and write him a note. I got some great Navy-themed paper at Micheal's to make some cards. I heard via his girlfriend that he had an ear infection (he didn't tell the momma about that) so maybe some cards will put some pep back in his step.

I am glad to hear they are in the same barracks/ship/facility...whatever. And I would love to see the photo you referenced. I am on FB RTC every now and then, so if you can't add the link here, where on the FB page is your son's photo?

I am SO proud of myself for getting another letter in the mail this morning. Of course, I haven't received any additional letters from my SR, but that isn't a huge shocker. I managed to make and send two cards over the weekend. I even printed and sent some photos.

I hope all of you are having more luck getting letters sent home. And I was thrilled to see so many other mothers from the USS Hopper on here. We should make plans to do that Sarge Meet & Greet or something so we can meet up prior to the PIR.

Div 089 family members, how are we all doing today?  Thus far we haven't received a letter beyond the form letter, but rest assure, we are sending letters to our SR.  Occasional pictures here and there.  Some funny too!  I can just imagine one particular picture I sent will have all laughing, maybe the RDCs too.  It's my SR and his little brother.  Little brother is flexing his muscles and it looks so funny.  Keep sending encouraging letters and look forward to PIR.
