My youngest goes to the performing arts school here in Dayton. He plays violin in the orchestra and stand up bass in the jazz band. He's a freshman. Also electric bass & guitar. He just got home from boy scouts and first song he plays is Ring of Fire, Johnny Cash. I was the chef for the performers of a big music festival here in Dayton. I got to cook for and eat with Ralph Stanley and his band (family). Great man. Great memories!

Wow.  I saw Ralph Stanley at a Bluegrass Festival in Southern California in 1979.  We had a chance to visit with him briefly.  I agree with your comments.  What did you cook for him?!  Isn't it great that our kids have music?  :-)

I did over 1000 meals that weekend. I did do fried chicken on the day Ralph came. He was headliner and he pulled that tour bus up, it was so cool. My fiddle player youngest son, played with I think Ralph's grandson in the warm up room. He even invited him on to the bus. We LOVE bluegrass music.....all music. We even went to the Bill Monroe and Bluegrass musuem in KY. My fiddler player is now into Steve Martin, the comedy, banjo player. Great music there.

The jazz band my youngest is involved with was one of only 4 high school jazz bands invited to NYC Lincoln Center. They won the Bereklee HS jazz comp last year and got invited this year to NYC. Talk about good...OMG, they really are good. because he is an alternate and a freshman, he is not going to NYC. His school is 7-12 grades. He auditioned (the only to get in) and he got in. He can walk to school. TV shuts off at 9am and nothing but music till evening news here at this house.

My Valentine's Day gift to spouse and youngest son was the CD Chimes of Freedom, the songs of Bob Dylan. It is an ablum just released from Amnesty International. 4 cds, 75 songs, done by various artists. I loaded it on my IPOD before I gave it to them and we listened to it last night at dinner. That's 4 hours of our music to Great Lakes done!

WOW!!! My ex plays banjo and when we met I only knew about musical theater, classical music and a little Jazz.  I discovered Bluegrass music when I started dating him.  It was a whole world I didn't know.  I do love Irish music as well and you can definitely hear the roots of Bluegrass in it.  We met Bill Monroe after a show over 30 years ago. My ex interviewed him for an article he was writing about Byron Berline. I laughed when you mentioned Steve Martin...love his music and his comedy.  Do you know of Stuart Duncan?  Long story, but my ex was in a band with him when Stuart was about 12.  He is with The Nashville Bluegrass Band, I think.  Also, have you heard the Punch Brothers with Chris Thiele?  Oh, I could talk music all day! :-)

The school your youngest attends sounds like the one my SR attended. It had a Jazz band that went to NYC the year before my SR started going there. It was a shame that the program changed at his school when the Jazz teacher took another job at a more well-known school.

I am going to check out that CD you mentioned.  That sounds WONDERFUL!

Have a great day.  Maybe a letter? 15 days and counting!!!!

Forgive all the references to my 'ex'.  We are on good terms and have been for awhile...makes it easier for all parties concerned.

For all you Whitney Houston fans. . . this is at the dancing fountains in Dubai.

Thanks, for this.

Really lovely tribute, thanks so much for sharing this!

So cool. Thank you!

Amazing,   she will never be forgotten that is for sure.   she had a voice like no other.   Every time I would hear her sing it would give me chills

My SR had written that he wanted pizza after PIR. His father and I (divorced) always took him Giodonios for pizza and Garretts for popcorn. So this morning, I look up the pizza place and they have one 7 miles from the base!!! Yeah! Now for those who do not know about Garretts.....the BEST popcorn ever. I have ordered online and have had it delivered. When travelling to Chi-town, always stop at Garretts. They are located in O Hare, terminals 1 and 3. I know what my SR will be eating while he waits. The pizza is killer too. Deep dish Chicago pizza!

Sounds delicious!  Hope I'm flying in to one of those terminals!
