I can't stop thinking about him and worrying about him.  I start tearing up at the drop of a hat.  I have been reading everything I can about what is happening to him each day.  Some of it has comforted me some of it has worried me a little. I just hate not being able to call him or talk to him.  Eight weeks seems like such a long time right now..

I made reservations at Ramada.  I'm sorry I did not answer you sooner.  It was too much stalking the mailman and both this page and the RTC facebook page, so I started taking on extra shifts at work to help make the time go.

I HAVE NOT GONE ON FACEBOOK BOOK YET. I WILL HAVE TO TRY TO LOG IN. I WE WILL BE STAYING AT RAMADA AS WELL. HOPE TO MEET YOU.  WE ARE DRIVING. WE LEAVE IN CLEVELAND SO, THE DRIVE SHOULD TAKE ABOUT 7 HOURS.IF WE DONT GET LOST.MISS MY SON LIKE CRAZY APRIL CANT GET HERE SOON ENOUGH

My son is also in Ship 09 Div 111.  I received the letter today.

LOL Carol at your comment, can April 6th get here any faster.  I agree.  April seems so far away but I'm thinking once the calendar turns to March 1, it may feel better, at least psychologically!  My son arrived 2/7 and was quickly assigned to 11/110.  I received the form letter and kid in a box very quickly so that was comforting.  I'm guessing most of them started Day 1/Week 1 on February 13th and it is cool to think my son already has one full week of boot camp training (beyond P days) under his belt.

And Mike's Mom, my son's PIR is 4/6.  Ship 11/Div 110.  I've made my hotel reservations because I didn't want to wait until the last minute and get stuck with a dumpy hotel.  I'm flying out of Richmond, VA but the airfares are around $400 right now.  I'm going to wait until early March, when I think they will have come down, before buying them.

Does Southwest fly out of one of the airports near you.  I am finding they are so much cheaper then the other airlines.  Plus, they have 2 free checked bags and if you have to change your flight (let's say because he gets to have more liberty or something) they only charge you the difference in what the new flight is and what you already booked, so I'm leaning towards them.  It's not a totally refundable ticket, but it seems pretty hassle free.

I thought I would post here.  My son graduated PIR 2/10/12.  And I thought I might give you a few pointers.  We stayed at the Ramada Inn and it was very nice.  Their Meet and Greet was very nice, kind of low key.  They have some snacks and soft drinks.

If you get a chance, go on the Navy for Moms website, there are a lot of videos there on Boot Camp that will give you an idea of what your recruit will be going through.

The first couple of weeks you won't receive any letters. When they do start writing letters, you will probably receive them either Wednesdays or Thursdays - at least, that is when I would normally get mine.  Depending on the Chief, some Divisions made more calls than others.  My son only made one call and that was 2 weeks before graduation.  So it varies among the divisions.

Several of the Hotels offer "shuttle" service.  That is actually a nice size van that will take you to the front gate of the Base and drop you off.  You will have to walk to the Hall.  I read somewhere that is a 100 yard walk - it is all flat (no hills).  I think the cost is $3 a person.  You will have to call the hotel to have them come pick you up.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!  Good luck with your recruits!

Diane

Hi Diane, Thanks for the information.  I keep reading about using the hotel shuttles to get to graduation.  Is there a reason that we would not want to just drive there?  We will be staying at a hotel but we will have a rental car.  I just thought we would have more freedom if we had our rental car with us.  Mostly because we don't know when our SR can leave.  He is doing A school there in GL.  Also, what time does graduation usually start?  I keep seeing posts that say they left really early (ie before 6:30 am - sometimes earlier).  Thanks for your help.

Some people take the shuttles to avoid the traffic.  The gate opens at 6:30 a.m. and the graduation starts at 8:45 a.m.  My son specifically requested us not to take a shuttle because he wanted to go "shopping" afterwards.  We had 11 divisions graduating in our group.  From what I saw at our graduation, there didn't seem to be any problems with the traffic.

They do have refreshments at the Graduation Hall - coffee, soft drinks and popcorn.  We didn't buy any.  So I can't say how much they are.  One word of warning.  Stay away from the NEX.  After the graduation, EVERYONE goes to the NEX.  What we did is go there when we dropped our son off that night, no one was there and you can shop them.  When you bring your sailor back that night, you can come on the base as far as the Chapel.  The NEX after graduation is a ZOO.

For those who like to shop, there is a fantastic Outlet Mall not too far from the Base call Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall - really nice!! It is on 132 off of 131 (to give you some perspective, Ramada Inn is on 131).

Diane

Thanks for the information - it is very helpful!!  I think I read we only have 7 Divisions graduating on 4/6 so I bet we could bring the car for sure without too much hassle.  Thanks for the shopping recommendation!

thanks for the information.  I am a little nervous we reserved two rooms at the Ramada.  I have seen some not so good reviews.  Did you find the room clean? etc?   Was there a fee for the shuttle?  I have six more weeks to go!! I cant wait.  I just received my first letter.  It made my day.  Thanks for your info.  Carol

My son left on Feb. 7th I miss him so much. Thought I would get a letter today. Crying at the mail box. No word. If I just knew he was ok, it would be better. 8 weeks feels like forever. Ship 2 Div 921...
