Hi ladies I have a few questions! My husband will be graduating this upcoming Friday and he'll be leaving for Charleston the next day. When he comes to get me and my son will they give him money to get a U-Haul to get us or will we have to pay for that ourselves? I've heard that the Navy will but I also heard that the Navy won't.

The Navy will not pay for your U-Haul. That is my experience.
Thank you!
This is how it worked out for me: my husband graduated on a Friday (obviously) and flew out of Chicago to Charelston the following Tuesday. He had access to a phone and computer when he got here (your husband may want to buy another phone card) but I was able to overnight his phone to him as soon as he sent me the address. He had meetings over the following week and flew home to get me the next Wednesday (so overall he was here in Charleston for a little over a week before coming home to me).  One of the meetings he'll go to is a moving brief. He'll have to submit his flight itinerary, a driving plan back to Charleston showing stops every two hours and where you'll spend the night while you're travelling.  They'll allow you 1 day of travel for every 350 miles travlled + 1 day. One of the fears our family had was that we would have to rush to get here but it was the total opposite.  They don't want their "Investments" getting hurt travelling so they aren't allowed to travel certain hours (can't remember what they are) but you'll have plenty of time to get here. I took care of renting the Uhaul and loading it but the day I went to pick it up the Navy had already deposited 40% of our moving money (you're husband will have to submit banking info too).  That took care of the Uhaul rental, the trailer for our car and hotel/gas.  You should keep all receipts because they'll reimburse you for pretty much everything (pretty sure they'll pay if you buy boxes) and you'll submit those once you're here to get the rest of your moving money. You will have to weigh your truck empty there and once you get here you'll weigh your truck loaded (we knew some poeple that forgot and had to reload their truck to go weigh!). Ok, sorry for rambling...yes, they will pay for your move :) if you have any other questions please let me know! I was so clueless and didn't feel like I could find any of my answers and until a girl on here helped me out :)
So basically they gave you 40% of the money upfront? I'm just wondering because right we're pressed for money. We're gonna have to get him home to get us somehow and then we're gonna have to gas up our truck and the U-haul because U-Haul doesn't have anything that can haul the truck. :(
Yeah it was direct deposited into our account. Ours covered everything: Uhaul, gas to Charleston and hotels. I understand the money situation too and if you ever need any help with money you can contact the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society www.nmcrs.org and they can do a lot to help you out if you're in need. I'm pretty sure they can do interest free loans...but don't hold me to that. We have one here on base (we live right behind it too) and we visited them on our Spouse Indoc tour but it's been a year since then and I can't remember everything. I expected the Navy to pay for his plane ticket home when he came to get us but they don't. My ignorance, I guess. Are you planning to live on base?
Ok thank you! Yes we are planning to live on base. Hopefully we'll be in our house. I hear that there's not a waiting list. But we live in NC and Charleston's only 6 hours away from us so we can make there in a one day trip hopefully!

sweet thanks for the info

My husband leaves for BC in April and I have been trying to find out as much as I can about the move as well.  This website: http://www.militarynewcomers.com/NWSCHARLESTON/Guide.html

is fabulous and you can even see floor plans of the homes that may be your options.  Of course it is my understanding that you don't really get much of a choice, but it's nice to know what you might be working with = )  Also, if you have a power of attorney you can go ahead and fill out the application and submit everything before your husband even finishes with BC.  This can help speed up the process, though I'm not sure by how much.  The Housing Center (number is on the website) staff is very friendly and helpful also.  All of the people I have talked to who have recently been through GC A school have said the move is paid for.  Previously I don't believe it was.  Also some people have tried to say you MUST live on base while others say you have a choice.  Financially, however, on base seems to be the way to go, at least in GC.  Hope that helps and please feel free to share anything else you learn!  Good luck!
