Greetings. With my daughter just starting basic, we're preparing to attend PIR in 8-9 weeks or when we get her date (haven't gotten the first letter yet or the box of her clothes).

BUT

We have an adult son who is severely disabled physically and mentally who is in a customized wheelchair, and I'm concerned about how wheelchair-accessible Great Lakes is. Can anyone give me some insight into the areas we will have access and if there are accessible restrooms? Having that knowledge now would go a long way in helping us prepare.

Don't worry Mom :)  GL is very accessible.  Bring your handicap placard, and the parking assistants will direct you to the appropriate spot. Once inside, there is a place for the wheelchair seating.  Also, there are no stairs.  Enjoy!!!!!

@salpetty: Thanks. I think we're going to have to have a long talk with our son and make sure he understands that there will be certain things he cannot do there, like try to wave at every person and salute every sailor he sees.

No stairs is great to hear. But I'm assuming there are no family bathrooms, right? Just regular accessible stalls in regular bathrooms? (It's easier for us to care for him if the hubby and I tag-team him.)

I'm not sure about the rest rooms, but because it is in a hall where graduations have to accommodate those that are disabled, I assume the rest rooms are accessible as well.  Don't sweat it.  People will understand.  And if they don't, they are ignorant.  Just enjoy your daughter's day!  I have a girl sailor too :)  She graduated GL in Sept.

There is a residence inn nearby that has handicap accessible rooms.  Also, I was struck by the accommodations for handicapped individuals at GL-  parking, access to the building and actually when you respond to the forms for PIR, they will meet you at the door with a wheelchair.  There is also a great viewing area in the building where the ceremony is held.  I think it is one of the best venues i have ever seen for anyone with a handicapped relative.  Don't miss it!!!

Chocoholic - I'm not too sure about handicapped accessible bathrooms in the training hall.  When I went to the restroom I went down a flight of steps into a big open room that had stalls with curtains and I didn't notice if there was a handicapped one - there may not be as it wouldn't really be used in the training hall.  That was where they were sending the ladies - I'm not sure if where they were sending the men was different.  Also - that was in the actual drill hall where PIR takes place - there may be handicapped accessible bathrooms in the visitor center (the building you walk through to check in and get to the drill hall).  You may want to contact RTC directly and ask them.  The email for public affairs is rtc.pao@navy.mil.  I was trying to find the phone number but couldn't - sorry!  The people in public affairs are great and very responsive.  They should be able to answer your questions.

@Jenn: thanks for the email address! I will contact them sometime in the next week.

@Navymommo: thanks for the pointers to Residence Inn. I will definitely check it out!
