Hi,

My daughter just arrived on board and I was wondering how it works when the ship comes back home over the summer or whenever that may be.

You always see images of family members greeting their sailors when the ships dock.

So how do we make arrangements to meet the ship and all?

I got to spend a couple days with her before she left so I learned my way around NAS. The Navy Lodge seems to be in a convenient location. I enjoyed staying on the beach, though I imagine the rates will be higher than they were last week. And yes, the ocean was freezing cold!

Thanks!

Your sailor has to be invovled....the rquests are made by them for you to get on base and be peir side.  Become a member of the ALFA(abe lincoln family association).  That way you will be updated when and where things go down!  Good Luck and enjoy.  My sailor will be home in June. Done with the Navy!  Ship not due on the East coast till Sept or later.

How do you become a member of ALFA?

Would like to become a member of ALFM

This is the link to the ALFA Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/ALFA.ALL/

To become a member of ALFA you need to go to Facebook and ask to be a member. You also have to get email your sailor so they can let them know who you are, so they will accept you as a member.

Thank you for the info!

I'm on it!

Thanks for the info!

Just so you know, being a member of ALFA is not the only way to get to be pier side.  When they came home a year ago, we just drove to San Diego and (even though he had put us on a guest list) drove right onto the base.  They didn't even check ID or anything at the gate.  I've tried a couple of times to join ALFA and haven't had any success.  I guess my son hasn't emailed them or whatever.  I am FB friends with the squadron ombudsman (he's airwing, not ship's company) and that helps me to get info about what all is going on.

All, please remember OPSEC and not discuss when the ship is due home.

Jimbo, your sailor will be advised when they are free to inform family members of dates.  There will also be a toll free number posted closer to arrival.  Family travel plans need to be flexible (ie, plan for higher air fare.  At this point, your sailor will appreciate care packages, e-mail and phone cards!

N4M is a good source of support for other family members, but no sensitive information is shared on this site.  Welcome to our group; it's always fun to meet other Navy Moms/Dads from different parts of the country while at home and traveling.

yes always keep OPSEC in mind. no official return date has been announced by the captain to all the families via their fb profile.

Also, each base will be different based on what they allow and don't allow. From what I have heard East coast navy is a little stricter then West Coast Navy. Idk if that will impact how you can or cannot get on base. But either way it will be CRAZYYY over in VA. I know traffic is already a pain as it is! I can ask an ALFA member about how that will work for other family members Etc. Please be aware that to get on base you could possibly have to have registration, insurance, your DL, everyone in the car over the age of I think 6 or something might need ID as well, and the car is supposed to be in your name or have a POA to operate the car. (although they usually dont ask for all that they can) So just so yall are prepared, also they might even require everyone to stop and get a temporary pass, while I doubt it. It is a possibility. So that way everyone is prepared for what all they might need. I have never had them ask me ever to get on any base but ya never know!

Also to be approved for the ALFA group you do have to make sure you give the correct info for your sailor and he replies to the email and says yes you are legit :) If you have to warn him he will be getting the email and to confirm it!!

I think I covered everything!! lol

LOL thank you for the info.  My problem has been finding out how to become a member of ALFA.  Someone said on facebook but I haven't been able to figure out how?? Am I being dumb or what?? lol

lol oh when you are on facebook all you had to do is in the search bar type ... USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 Family Readiness Group :) that should pull it up. then there are instructions on how to to apply pretty much to get added to the group lol. warn your sailor about that email. I know my husband almost deleted it!!
