This is the new  "Rules while on Liberty" from the Family Guide:(Bold mine)

"When you take your Recruit out on liberty, we know you will want to spend as much time with them as possible. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

Your Recruit should be given ample time to walk to their ship before the expiration of liberty.

Recruits may not travel more than 50 miles from base during liberty, meaning no further than downtown Chicago.

Recruits may not use alcohol or tobacco products, nor drive a vehicle.

Recruits must remain in uniform at all times. (*Note:The old Family guide had the words "...while in public." added to the end of the Uniform statement and it was taken off on the new one.

Recruits may not bring civilian items (clothes, mobile phone, MP3 player, etc.) or food back to RTC."

...and their FAQ page:(Bold mine)

"Liberty is ‘time off’ from the daily routine. Graduating Sailors will be granted liberty to go off-base during the day with their families.

  1. Graduating Sailors may not smoke, drive, or consume alcoholic beverages while on   liberty.
  2. Graduating Sailors must stay within a 50-mile radius of RTC.
  3. Graduating Sailors must remain in their complete uniform while on liberty. If they are engaging in physical activity or swimming, they must be in authorized Navy issued workout gear.
  4. Recruits reporting to A School at Training Support Center Great Lakes will detach from RTC on Friday.  All other recruits will depart on Saturday.  To get the most accurate information please contact your recruit.
  5. Families may not enter the base after graduation and will need to meet graduating Sailors for liberty at the main RTC gate.
  6. Graduating Sailors departing RTC for follow-on training the same day as graduation or in a duty status will be granted limited on-base liberty.
  7. Graduating Sailors receive an in-depth liberty briefing prior to their graduation day."

That being "said" we have tried to poll the recent PIR groups on this and most of the responses were that they were no longer allowed to change into civies in the hotel room. But I don't think we got enough feedback to say it is a definite "no".

Your new Sailors are given an in-depth briefing about Liberty. Follow their lead. If they ask, then I would bring it...the worst that could happen is that they say "no" at the briefing ...but they could say, "YES"!

From Recruit Training Command FB page March 15, 2012:

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command "Recruits are to be in uniform at all times. This is what their instructions are and this is what they know. It doesn't matter if anyone else states that no one will know what they are wearing in a hotel room, the recruits know they are to remain in uniform. If they will be doing any recreational activities, they must be in their PT gear."

How in the heck are they supposed to know what happens behind closed doors?  That is just plain dumb of them if they think that is going to work.  So are they saying that if they want to hang out naked in the hotel room that is fine that they just can't put on regular clothes while relaxing?

I posted the question on the RTC site to get a definite answer.

I suspect by removing the "while in public" portion of the statement, they no longer have to define "public".  Now they know they must not be seen out of uniform.  Obviously, what goes on behind closed doors, stays behind closed doors and they also don't talk about it when they get back or risk "getting caught".

As someone else said, I'm sure that wearing the uniform is a statement of pride in their accomplishments so we are probably more concerned about it than they are.  They are probably more thrilled to just see us and be "free" for a few hours.

Remember though, this is a military area, so although they are "free", there are military people both in and out of uniform who are everywhere and ARE watching them.

TY for asking mamabeans...we now have a definite answer. :-(

Are they allowed to bring there PT gear out while on liberty that day?

Don't know...your Sailors will be briefed!

Thank you...
They evidently haven't been briefed yet and that makes sense. In the last letter SR said to bring his black jeans and a specific T-shirt. I wrote what we have been told. I'm sure they will be so proud to wear the uniform that he won't care.
