No one ever wants to be second.   Not unless it means they will be getting showered with love by Molly moms for the second time!

The USS Cape St. George is our FIRST ever SECOND time adoption!  You ladies did such a great job the first time that they are back for more.  Our first time supporting the Cape was a Christmas adoption in 2010.  Over 50% of the crew is new since then, so even though the ship is being adopted a second time, many of the sailors will be first-time recipients of our love.

The Cape St. George is a guided missile cruiser based out of San Diego and is deployed as part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the U.S. 5th Fleet  as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. They left on their current deployment on December 7 and have already heard that they will be extended.   Their theme is "Dragon Slayers."  Their moto is "Always Victorious."

I did some research and found out that April is “Humor Month,” so the theme for this adoption is “humor.”  When I asked the POC about this theme, he said the crew will certainly be ready for some humor by the time our boxes start arriving.  So let’s try to bring smiles to their faces and laughter to their day!  Here are few ideas to get us started:

  • Clean joke books
  • Comics from local newspapers
  • Movie/sitcom dvd’s with a comedy theme
  • Silly putty
  • Funny ties
  • Those Groucho Marx fake glasses with the furry eyebrows
  • Knock-knock jokes from kids .  I thought this would be great for groups of kids…they can write down all their favorite corny jokes that we parents  get tired of hearing over and over =]
  • “Gag” gifts
  • A collection of humorous stories/pictures from the internet or your own family

Their specific requests are:

  • Magazines
  • Toiletries
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Snacks
  • Microwaveable food
  • Candy
  • DVD’s and popcorn for “movie nights”
  • Phone cards—The chaplain has requested phone cards and has said that he is willing to distribute them on an “as needed” basis.  There will be a separate address for the chaplain listed when shipping time comes.
  • Pillowcases: This group is able to receive pillowcases, so pillowcase moms, you are on duty!

We are also going to have some extra support and love from the Makin Island moms this month.  As a way to “pay it forward” for our adoption of their loved ones last month, they are going to hold a special packing party for the Cape St. George!  Thanks, Makin moms, you rock!!!

The male/female count is 350 male, and 6 female.

Here is a list of what we need and what we have so far:

Female pillowcases (6)—All taken care of!

Under The Bleachers by Seymour Hiney

How Things Work by Wyatt Dunne

Fell Off a Cliff by Eileen Dover

A U.S. Navy captain was about to start the morning briefing to his staff.
While waiting for the coffee machine to finish its brewing, the captain
decided to pose a question to all assembled.

He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he
failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep.

He posed the question of just how much of sex was "work" and how much of it
was "pleasure?"

A commander chimed in with 75-25% in favor of work.

A lieutenant said it was 50-50%.

An ensign responded with 25-75% in favor of pleasure, depending upon his
state of inebriation at the time.

There being no consensus, the captain turned to the seaman who was in charge
of making the coffee. What was HIS opinion?

Without any hesitation, the young seaman responded, "Sir, it has to be 100%
pleasure."

The captain was surprised and, as you might guess, asked why?

"Well, sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me
doing it for them."

The room fell silent.

God Bless the Navy sailor.

(bwa ha ha one of my favorites of all time)

A joke to add to the collection~

                                FISHING ON THE LAKE

A famous admiral and an equally famous general were fishing

together when a sudden squall came up. When it died down both

eminent warriors were struggling helplessly in the water.

The admiral floundered his way back to the boat and pulled himself

painfully in. Then he fished out the general, using an oar.

Catching his breath, he puffed: "Please don't say a word about this to anyone. If the Navy found out I can't swim, I'd be so disgraced.

"Don't worry," the general said. "Your secret is safe. I'd hate to have my men find out I can't walk on water."

Cute!!!!

Oh my goodness, the jokes here are so funny!  That crew is going to be laughing until their tummies hurt.

This is the last weekend before we ship next week, March 21-23.  You moms have done a great job so far taking care of our boys and girls.  I will get a list posted of all the goodies I know of that are packed and ready to go...or at least sitting in someone's house waiting to be packed :)

Right now off with my daughter and her 4H club to deliver St. Patty's day meals (yes, we know we are a day early) to veterans in our town.  Some know we are coming and some don't...might be interesting.  If no one is home, I might not have to cook tonight ;)

I have 11 boxes packed with assorted goodies and 1 packed with toiletries.  I am getting more items tomorrow and hoping to fill another 5 or so boxes.

I'm in! I can fill a box alone. Wish I had seen this sooner so I could get others involved.

Oh Lorraine we will be doing it all over again next month.....welcome to us one box moms !!!!

Hello Moms...I just posted a list of items we have under this month's main discussion.  Scroll down untill you see the red text and what we have is listed below.  If I have missed something, let me know!

I am so impressed with all the hard work and love you ladies are exhibiting!!!

I made up a bunch of silly cards and bought some book of humor, but until I get the box ready to pack can't really tell you what will go in it. I have some fun stuff in my bins though

I have two boxes full that includes 4 mac n cheese bowls, 8 microwavable meals, assorted protein bars, fruit snacks and individual mixed nut packets. I also included Spam and rice packets and some tortilla stuffers with a package of tortillas. I'll make another run at the store this week and see what I can find.
