My son is leaving from Louisiana April 10th.  Looks like they'll be together.  Hi, My name is Star.  Good luck and stay strong!

We are having a small family/friend get together for him Saturday. I think I planned it more for me than for him. Lol! Although he is 24, he is my only child and has always lived within a couple hours from us. I am excited for him but anxious about it all. Thank you for your words of support! I am so glad for this site!

We are having our going away party Saturday as well.  Family and Friends, games, and crawfish boil.  Like you, probably more for the adults than for him.  He is 18 and doesn't like goodbyes; so he wanted something upbeat and unemotional.  He won't let me go to the ceremony or airport with him, so this is all I get... :-)

Hang in there Norma.  The support we've always had for our children, will really shine through this road they have chosen and we are so proud of them...... What a wonderful thing for a mom to brag about.!!  :-)

What will his job be? Mine is doing Medical corpsman ( hope I am using correct term). He will go to San Antonio after bootcamp. We are very proud, too.
We live in Eastern Arkansas; he lives in Central Arkansas. We are planning to go to airport, but I if I think I'll be too emotional may say goodbye before. I think I can hold it together. Lol

His recruit decided to put him through as 'undertermined'.  ???  From what I understand, and its all greek to me; he will go from field to field, whereever they need him and eventually train in many fields.  At some point a determination will be made and he'll build a career around that.

I have tried a few times to get permission :-) from my son to go to the swearing in and meeting him at the airport; but he asked that I don't.  After his explanation, I have to respect it.  Not going to be easy, but I want to make 'his' transisition easier than mine.

I can't believe how quick it came around. He was scheduled to leave June 13th, but came home one day and said I'm leaving April 11th.  Actually mom, I'm leaving April 10th, because I'm going to go spend the night with my recruit, because I don't like goodbyes..... Quicker than a flash two  months was taken away from me!  :-) But we are all so excited for him.

I will probably break down too; but we, as moms need to hide this from them.  Especially since my son, is already hiding his weakness............:-)

I agree. I know it's really tough for them going into the unknown.
How was your party? We had a wonderful time with family and close friends. If I get this site figured out, I'll post pics. The preparations for the party were distracting , but reality hit this morning.

Evening Norma.  I am glad your party went well.  We too, had a great day.  The weather cleared after raining for three days and causing us to go to Plan B, but was a beautiful day with family and a few close friends.  We had about 40.  My son had a nice time visiting and I stayed strong for the most part, only loosing control once when we cut the cake for about 2 minutes.  I did post some pictures adn I t hink if you click on my name it will take you to my page and you can see the pictures there.  We had a crawfish boil and man they were good!

What did ya'll end up doing?  Yes reality hits in quickly doesn't it.  Just savor the next couple of weeks that you have with your seaman.  Mine, on the other hand, left for a seven day cruise with his cousin, friends and brother, so my reality of an empty house was a sharp cut to the soul!  :-(  But I'm doing ok.

So your son knows already where is heading after bootcamp? How? We are so naive to this whole 'Navy' thing!  A school; C school; grad-n-go; uggghhh... when? where? what?

Oh, I was given a naval flag as a gift for our going away party.  I LOVE IT!  I am so going to fly it proudly!  Also got my first 'Navy" shirt.  Not a navy mom shirt, but I love it anyway!

Well going to go watch a little tv now....I hope you are doing well this evening and remember to only show that you are proud!

Hugs!

Star

I can't believe we just have a week! I had a little "moment" yesterday. I got a little weepy.
About the job. Yes, Simon (pronounced See-moan :)) knows he is in the
medical corps, but he doesn't know exact area. He will most likely be assigned to a Marine unit since the Marines do not have their own medical guys. He won't be in battle, but could be on base hospital or clinic. He is hoping for physical therapy assistant. He arranged this with his recruiter before signing because it is in writing. Also, to get this "job" Simon had to wait until April although he signed last August. Your son's recruiter should have gone over line scores on the ASVAB to see what he qualifies for. I reminded mine to take his transcript for college classes with him next week. If yours has taken any colleges courses, send it it because it will get him a higher pay raise. You may already know this, but just in case.
I know all that, but still don't understand the whole departure procedure! He lives in Little Rock where he will depart from the airport, but has to spend the night before at a hotel.
We are going over for the weekend. Let's keep in touch! Oh, and mine told me yesterday I shouldn't write him, but just save the news for June! Ha!
I hope I don't have too many typos. I'm using an iPad and it won't let me scroll up to proof read.
Hugs Back!
Norma

Good Morning Norma.... our time is here!  We are excited over here.  I think maybe because I've gone through a boot camp experience once before, I am really not saddened about this; but also feeding off Garrett's excitement, is undeniable.  He is packed and saying his last good byes to certain people.  Even though he had a fairly large going away party a couple of weeks ago, we are having a family dinner Monday night before he lives.  My immediate family is 20 people. Then he, his brother and I will take my mom to breakfast the morning he leaves. Then we'll hang out a hour or two and we'll all drop him off at his recruiting office.  He has asked that we don't go to the airport to see him off.......so I'll honor that.!

By now, I guess you are packed and heading over to see Simon!  YAY!  So exciting! Oh, you have to write him.  Don't get too mushy and be careful what you say to him in the letters, but he will want to hear from home.  My other son was in boot camp for five months (behavior bootcamp) and he came home with EVERY letter.  I actually found them the other day!

You hang in there.  You will do just fine!  Remember, Simon, made a AWESOME decision in wanting to get experience in the military.  What a great, structural, rewarding experience.

I look forward to seeing/meeting you in June! We'll have to meet up for sure!  My personal email address is:  mygalstar@yahoo.com; if you'd like to chat there, or I have a facebook page for my son.  Garrett's Travels.  Look it up; join.. would love to have you!  Maybe Garrett and  Simon will make the same ship/division/whatever......they do! That would be AWESOME!

Hugs and stay strong.
