Thanks to you all for your words of encouragement, it is very much appreciated.  I recieved his call last night around 10:00 and he sounded very nervous but good.  He told me they are going to remove his wisdom teeth, can anyone tell me why they would do this and will it set him back on graduation day?

Removing wisdom teeth is pretty standard if a SR still has them (mine did).  I think it's because it's so common for them to cause trouble later that they take them out as a precaution.  Honestly, it seems like it's pretty common for most teens to have them out "as a precaution" these days.

No, it won't set him back.  There will most likely be a large number of SRs in his division who are getting their wisdom teeth removed.  It's just part of boot camp and it's actually included in the schedule of what happens.

Congratulations on getting your call!  It's standard procedure to remove their wisdom teeth.  They would rather do it now while they have them rather than having something come up when they are out to sea.  Not everyone has to have them removed (my son didn't) - but it is pretty typical that most do.  Don't worry.  They get a few days on light duty and it doesn't affect their PIR date.

It shouldnt set him back and I have read its common. We were talking about this last night because I believe they will have to remove my sons one as well (we had three already removed). The same question was raised and my dad (prior Navy) said, "well you don't want to be out at sea and have problems with your wisdom teeth!" Aha.. you probably don't

Our son graduated from bootcamp on 3/16.  When we went up there we heard about all that he experienced during boocamp.  Everyone HAS to see the dentist and if you have cavities, they fill them; if you have wisdom teeth that could cause problems down the road, they pull them, etc.  He said a lot of SR's had to have dental work done.  It didn't put any of  them behind in anything.  They also have to have their eyes checked.  He said alot of people who didn't come with glasses, ended up getting glasses.  Their physicals are from head to toe!

I had LOTS of questions when our son was in bootcamp and this site was a huge blessing.

I concur with the other comments. My son also got his wisdom teeth pulled out. All four. It got him two days of rest and one day of limited duty. He will still graduate this friday as scheduled. they did a great job. No swelling or anything.

Got my phone call yesterday around dinner time. He's ship09 Div 136. I think they had just given him all our letters because he sounded a little weepy but good. He didn't have to get his wisdom teeth removed luckily. It does set them back a couple of days hopefully it doesn't interfere with graduation What ship/Div is your son in?

RTC plans for SRs to have their wisdom teeth removed.  It does not set them back (at least not the way I'd define "set them back").  SRs are SIQ and then LLD for a few days.  It does not change their graduation.  Whatever is going on while SRs have their wisdom teeth out is not something they can't easily miss or make up. Getting wisdom teeth out is scheduled into the boot camp routine.  I suppose if a SR had a bad reaction or got particularly sick or something like that, he/she could get ASMO'd to a different division, but that would not be the norm.

I have not received that information yet, when did you recieve it, did it come before or after you recieved his clothes back?
