Hi!  I officially became a Navy mom on Thursday and couldn't be more proud!  I am feeling so many emotions right now.  Would love to connect with other parents who have a DEP leaving 9/6/2012.  The best advice the recruiter gave me was to join NavyforMoms.com.  This website is awesome and a wealth of information!!!

We took our son to the recruiter the day before and he was taken to a hotel near MEPS since he had to be there bright and early the day he was leaving.  We then drove to MEPS that morning and witnessed his official swearing in.  When you get the form letter from your recruit it will have his mailing address, his PIR date, and your recruit will write on their the 4 people he has put on the list for graduation.  However through letters and eventually when you speak to him on the phone, you are able to have him change the 4 that he has put on the list.  They have up til, I  believe the week before to change the people on the list.  http://bootcamp.navy.mil/grad_day.asp - this website will give you the upcoming graduations for about the next 7 upcoming and will tell how many divisions are graduating...look under the family link and it will have upcoming graduations... there is a lot of helpful information on that link.  My first son was staying for A School  in Great Lakes sort of across the street from Bootcamp so we had the whole weekend with  him.  However if your son has A school somewhere else, then you only have Friday after PIR til about 9 that night to spend with them.  Most sailors fly out the next morning. They go to the airport very early I believe like 3 or 4 am, not 100 percent sure on that.  You may choose to sit with them at the airport since their flights aren't usually til later in the morning or afternoon.  However, my son would rather I didn't sit with him, no sense in us all being miserable he insists and that way he can nap in the USO, etc.  Occasionally I hear that some Sailors get delayed until Sunday or Monday flying out but it is very rare.  They say to wait until about 3 weeks to go to make your airline reservations just to be sure....it will be different for me this time since mine is going to Pensacola and not staying Great Lakes.  We also had less divisions at PIR and we got there much earlier than we needed to...seemed like a long wait til it actually started but it was definitely worth the wait.  I remember feeling the way you do and I remember how hard it was when my first son left for bootcamp, but it goes by faster than you realize and the handwritten letters are something I will treasure forever.  Keeping positive is important and I it is such an important thing they are doing and things could be much worse.  I am glad I can answer questions, I didn't know about Navy for Moms until my son left for BC and I felt so in the dark!!  Anything else, please feel free to ask...

Oh and we flew into Milwaukee, it is a much nicer airport, and it is a straight shot down 94 to Great Lakes, didn't have to deal with any of the Chicago traffic which I hear can be awful.  The ride from Milwaukee was great, no traffic and scenic!!

Thanks for the tip to fly into Milwaukee.  My husband totally agrees it will be much less stressful flying into Milwaukee.  O'Hare is so crazy; we will do anything to avoid stress and delays.  Where did you stay?

We stayed at the Springhill Suites in Waukegan....very nice and clean, and very easy to get to PIR....A lot of people like to stay at the Navy Lodge which is very near to GL but I heard it was a little dated, however their hospitality is supposed to be awesome.  Might try them this time, not sure yet...

Hi,

Was thinking about you and wondering if you heard from your son that was deployed yet?  My prayers are with all of our military.  I have been doing a lot of research regarding where to stay and I am torn between the Navy Lodge, Residence Inn and Springhill Suites.  Grandma is coming with us and she is in a wheelchair.  I don't know if it would be better to stay at a place that has a shuttle or just rent a car and drive everywhere.  I need make this trip as easy as I can for Grandma.  Don't know how accommodating it is for the handicapped at PIR when you drive yourself.  I have read that if you drive yourself, you park far away but if you take a shuttle, they drop you off right where they check ID's.   I did contact the Navy Lodge and they said that they offer larger rooms for those in wheelchairs which was great to hear.  They were very very helpful and emailed me promptly.  We don't care about having a pool, etc., just a clean place to put our heads down.  Just am struggling between car rental vs. shuttle.

Honestly, you will need a car anyway...its far from the airport in Milwaukee to Great Lakes...plus if you want to do things after PIR, it's good to have a car.  Most hotels offer a shuttle, I know Springhill Suites does...Also the parking at PIR is not far away at all from where you go in...so that shouldn't be a concern, and if you have someone in a wheelchair, they stay on the floor in front of the bleachers and I believe they can have one person sit with them, not sure if it can be more...however the rest of you could sit in the first row right above them, just get there early enough.  We got there around 6:30 or 6:45 and since there weren't a lot of divisions graduating, it was too early.  It really depends on the number of divisions.  I did hear from my son on FB, we haven't spoken, and the only reason he messaged me was so that I could send him something...sheez.  He is not allowed to tell me exactly where he is, and they haven't been in a port for about 6 weeks so I imagine he is getting antsy!!  Thanks for asking...I do miss him!!

My son leaves Sept. 18, 2012.... I am so excited for him :) I am also very nervous. I have been a Navy mom for about a month. His recruiter has been great and so far this has been a very good exsperince for him. He goes twice a month to DEP meetings and actually somewhat works out at home. :) He is still only 17 and graduates in May. He is also trying for the NROTC scholarship. If he gets that we have been told they will delay him until after college. He got accepted to The Citadel in Charleston SC. :) So I am still in hopes he gets to stay for college before BC but, at the same time I wonder if BC wouldn't help him later. I am so glad to meet so many mom's on here that are facing the same things I am. It helps to know I am not alone!

I do agree joining this website has been a God send!

Congratulations!   What a honor to be accepted into The Citadel!!!!   I prayed my son would do the ROTC/college route first but no one could convince him.  He is graduating 10th in his class so it is quite frustrating for his father and I to see him enlist without going to college first.  College is so important but he tells me that the training he will receive as a Hospital Corpsman, he will be able to get a job in the medical field should he not make a career out of the Navy.  Best of luck to your son and keep me posted on how he is doing.

My son Goes, he said the %th so not sure if thats the date or a day is allowed to travel from TX. He is 17 and will be 18 in June.  Graduates high school in May. This is all new to me as it is to yall! He and I are really close. Hes my first born. I have a daughter who is 11 also. Im really glad and sad! Im sure you all are too!

he said on the 5th of September. Sorry about that, didnt proof read first!

Congratulations to you and your son!  I wonder if they will graduate together?  What is he going for?  My son is going for Hospital Corpsman.  I am new to this too but this website is a wealth of information and the people are very nice too.  I have 2 boys, one graduating college on May 12th and then starting grad school for his MBA in June and my youngest graduating in June and leaving for basic training on Sept. 6th.  I have one leaving and one coming back so I won't be suffering from empty nest syndrome yet :).  I will be heartsick for my sailor to be though.  No one in my family has ever left the area; he will be the first so it will be hard for Grandma and everyone.  My father (who died 5 years ago on April 17th) was in the Navy and was on a destroyer.  The day he died, ironically, we were in Virginia Beach touring his base.  He would have been so proud to see his grandson in his Navy uniform.  Needless to say, PIR is going to be quite emotional for me.

hello, my son leaves for September 5, 2012 out of Pittsburgh. congratulations to all of you. This is my first . My son is the baby of the family. He graduates in June from High School. We are very proud of him and all the kids who are going. There are 3 other boys from his class all going into the service (all Marine Recruits). We come from a small school of only about 60 graduates. This will be a new experience for us. Im excited but sad to see him go. His A school is in California. sooo far away from WV.
