Hi im alyssia and im 19 years old. I have been accepted to notre dame college in south euclid ohio and i wanted to study nursing anf i was also recruited to swim for the college.

The problem is I have seen my mother struggle with her student loans and i do NOT want to go through that. I love the military and so we both (my mother and i) thought joining the navy would be a GREAT idea. I thought i had my mind made up, but then i read that i wouldnt be able to start school until after a year of being enlisted and even after that i would only be able to take a few classes at a time...

Now im not sure whether i should joing the navy and possibly taking a lot longer to get my degree or just go to school and get the student loans...

Im also afraid of having to get a job in the navy that i really wont enjoy...i need to choose in the next week and im so confused.

any suggestions..can anyone give me some insight?

I seriously doubt you can do swimming at the college level (even D III) and participate in the NROTC training that must be part of your education. You will have to make some decisions. If you have a scholarship, I would suggest get your degree in nursing (especially if being on the swimming helps with paying the tuition), then apply for entry into the Officer Candidate School Program. Read the stuff in the discussion (link provided by lemonelephant).

You should google NROTC, Navy OCS,  The physical requirements for doctors is not as difficult as for regular OCS.

My son was a serious competitive swimmer for many years before switching to water polo. He didn't do either sport when he went off to college to major in electrical engineering. The two a day training to be a swimmer exhausting for anyone w/o having to put long hours into studying as well.

Not trying to be rude, but if you go enlisted you are a Sailor FIRST going to college comes second to everything....it isn't like you would be able to join as enlisted and go to college full time...that isn't how it works....trying to get a nursing degree would be very hard as you wouldn't get time off to go do college stuff, if you had duty the same day you had college classes, you would miss the college class as you had to go to work.  If the ship gets underway..yes they do take some teachers with them..BUT they only teach the basics...for like an AA.

If a recruiter tells you that you can join as enlisted than go right for officer...they are WRONG!  You will have to finish bootcamp, the rest of yoru schooling, and be at your first command for at least one year before you can even apply for an Officers program.

As far as picking a job for enlisted, that depends on what is open and what your line scores are on your ASVAB.

YOU have a lot of thinking to do...if YOU have even a doubt in your mind that you could be enlisted for at least 4 years.. than do NOT join.
