Hey! My husband is an ET i moved to GL at the end of Feb. We actualy live about 6 miles from the base in gurnee. Schaumburg was too far for us. We LOVE our apartment compex and the area in general. Were 3 miles from gurnee mills mall six flags and all of that were close to kenosha libertyville and i thing just a good central location for what we were looking for. Good luck! If i can help at all please let me know!!

Awesome! We checked neighborhoods around base but couldnt find any that accepts huskies. We found an apartment that accepts huskies out in Schaumburg! I do have a couple of questions.. How is utilities out in IL? Hows the weather? I heard it's pretty cold half the time lol.

i know my complex allows big dogs! i can check on breed restrictions for you. well im from ga so the weather is way different for me lol its pretty cold but its manageable. utilities arent bad we have gas for cooking and stuff and i cook alot and its only around $30. electricity is about the same.

ok i just read the breed restrictions and husky is NOT on the list! they allow up to 75 pounds but im sure they wont stick him on a scale lol. feel free to text/email me as im not on here a whole lot. 770 894 9542 asengbusch@att.net

it can get cold, we didn't have too harsh of a winter this past year though! we got lucky (lol)... but the utilities were not bad. we paid about 50$ a month for gas and we managed to keep our electric bill at 60$!

That is a nice area...but on a good day the drive is an hour..on a bad day the drive can be more like 2 hours.  I would NOT live in that area...as if your Sailor is late getting to school or for duty they CAN force him to live in the barracks.

Yeah i understand its a hefty drive. My husband doesnt mind tho. He used to work in NYC (it was an hour and 30 min commute on a good day). Hes used to commuting.

Sure he won't mind...unless you are up here when the snow hits and the roads don't get plowed and he still has to be on base as the base doesn't shut down for anything (ok...once in the 6 years I was here the schools didn't happen...but duty section and their sister section had to be there...which meant 1/2 the students and staff...so there was a 50/50 odds that someone didn't have to come in).

IMO students should live NEAR the base as they are required to be on base every week day and have duty ever 4 days...plus they have events they are required to attend.

I would NOT recommend he live that far from the base, and before you go rent a place there, he should check with the staff in his barracks as I think there is a rule how far a student can live away from the base while a student and I want to say it is 50miles

I am from IL but I never lived in an apartment there, just with my family. Like Angie said, it is a far drive to Schaumburg! He might not mind driving but I couldn't do it....What season will you be there? The snow can be bad and he will NOT want to make that drive in the snow. Kenosha is a really nice area that isn't too expensive. I had a friend who lived there and her husband made the comute to Great Lakes. About a 30 min drive. I am from Beach Park which is about 10 mins away from Great Lakes. Gurnee is a great area also Grayslake is really nice... There are SOME nice places in Zion but some really bad places so you might want to stay away from North Chicago, Zion and Waukegan. Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

Thanks!

The breed restrictions can get a little crazy around here! We ended up living on base, just to make it easier- especially since A school guys who live ashore have to sign in at 5:45 every morning. Schaumburg IS nice, though- although everyone's right about it being a hike.  I just got here myself, but let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to answer- or if you want to meet up once you're here (It's pretty boring not knowing people!)

Sure! im going to be moving to IL by first week of June! which housing are you in?
