Where is a good place for me to find a general Power of Attorney? My son takes if final Oath one month from tomorrow and I don't want to be last minute getting this done.
Thanks.

Not sure if this is what you want

my daughters recruiter said that unless there are some personal issues that need to be handled during the 8 weeks of BC, a power of attorney isnt necessary until they deploy. At that time the Navy gives you a form to complete.
Thanks. I'm just wanting to make sure that I will be told what is going on if he gets sick and to be able to pay his bills for him while he is not able to do so. His car tag and such will be coming due in Nov and I want to be able to take care of that. I tend to be over cautious about these types of things.
Actually, will he be keeping his car? Or will you use it at home? Many recruits (and families) don't realize that boot camp is not summer camp. They won't be back when it's over for at least several months and perhaps longer. My son was one of those.
Make sure he packs up his clothes and things that he wants at A school and tells you what to do with the rest of his stuff. I still have boxes of my son's clothes and things boxed up in storage.
Ask him what he wants you to do if anything goes wrong at HOME as well.
You probably won't need a medical power of attorney until they deploy, but I suggest a durable power of attorney for banking purposes while they're at GL (unless they plan to do their banking via a military acct.). If he needs you to take care of home-banking issues or a lost/stolen debt card replacement, unless you're on the account, you're dead in the water. Or you can cross your fingers for 8 weeks and hope all goes well. :))) You can find free printable POA forms online easily. Then just have it notarized.
Hope that is clearer than mud! :)))
Thank you everyone. He and I went to legalzoom.com and he was able to have it done just as he wanted. Since we did not wait til the last minute, he is having it mailed to him and we will get it notarized and to the necessary people before he leaves for GL.
His A school will not be far from us, so when he is allowed to have his vehicle, we will take it over to him one weekend.
Thank you for suggesting the discussion about what to do with what he does not take to A school with him.
My husband keeps telling me that I'm acting as if our son is dying, but his just going into the Navy. The truth is, we are having to have discussions and handle his personal items as if he were leaving forever in a way. This is not summer camp or going off to college where he will be home frequently for me to do his laundry and such.
Although I'm still crying a lot of tears, I'm also finding that all of this is getting me tougher at the same time.
KarenP,
Just an aside, I don't know if it is the same for every A school, but I know our son's car has to be in HIS name if he is to have it while there. The insurance card has to list his name and that specific vehicle, as well. I was glad to hear that because his car is in our name. Though all of our names and all of our vehicles are listed on our insurance card, I wouldn't have batted an eye at taking his car to him registered the way it is.
Renee
Thanks Renee. That is actually something we took care a few months ago. We put his vehicle in his name and he is taking care of his own insurance. Needless to say, I like the looks of our car insurance bill every month now that is does not have a 18 year old boy and a 3rd vehicle on it.
I think I had read somewhere here that the vehicle/insurance needed to be in their name.
Get a POA. And the Medical. Believe me when I say you never know when you will need it. They can get hurt in boot and if you don't have it they will not talk with you. My son was badly hurt after leaving base one day. He wasn't deployed. Never dreamed in a million years I would need these things.Until I could come up with everything there was very little I could do. It was a nightmare.
Yes the Navy will draw up one..IF they ask for it. And its only good for year.
