I have seen another group on FB with the same ship and div but I think it must be a previous year as there are already pics that look like sailors in their uniforms.

Hi CTI Beth'sMom2.0! My kiddo is in 936 as well; I am assuming he is playing trombone in the band since that is what he did all through HS but since I haven't had anything but the form letter so far I don't know that he isn't a flag or something.

We probably won't make it to PIR since we are in AZ and he leaves for A school in Groton the next day. We are keeping our options open because I really love visiting Chicago but it makes more fiscal sense to visit him in Groton while he is there (and we can visit other family that live in Maine as well).

I will probably be begging for photos or videos if it does turn out we don't go.

I understand completely about not making the trip to Chicago. How did you find out already that he would be leaving the next day for his other command?

So glad to see this group started.  My brother is also in 936 as well. 

Our mom passed away 10 years ago and I have been known to step in for her once in a while. 

My family is planning on going to Chicago.  I have been trying to come up with the best hotel to stay at.

I booked at the Quality Inn. They have a free shuttle and are affordable.

Thanks for letting me know.  I looked into there and just booked our family there.  The free shuttle is a big seller, we have 9 or more going.  When your getting in late at night and leaving so early for graduation in the morning, hotel amenities don't matter much.

My daughter just called again!! Needing more information for her clearance. Just waiting for them to ask for our DNA samples...lol. She said she had received my 5 letters but none from anyone else. She reports her ankle is healing from the blisters and she sounded really good just homesick still. I programed ALL 3 numbers she has called from there in my cell phone. 847 is the area code that the call will come from when they call. Got to love these information calls they have to make because then you get to talk to them a lot...hehehe.

@Permalink -- There are links in the PIR 7/20 discussion group that explain a lot of how things happen when your recruit graduates but basically, if your recruit's A school is in Great Lakes they go right after graduation and check into their new command and then they are given liberty the rest of the weekend.

If, though, their A school is somewhere else then they have the afternoon after graduation for liberty, have to be back by a given time (about 2000 or 8:00 PM), and they are flown to their new command the next day. Since Alex will be going to Sub school and MT A school in Groton, CN we will only have those hours in the afternoon with him if we go (plus the ridiculous and teary pride of seeming him PIR, of course).

My son is a submarine sailor on the uss jimmy carter,  he did his schooling there, it was great for me, because he could take the train home to boston,  he is a radioman, and a buddy of his, Miller is stationed down there for 4 yrs.  any questions, would like to help,  right now my son's wife is there in bc grads on 7/20  like i said if I can help in anyway,  send me a message.  Hockeymom

Very nice that you were able to see him so often during A school, HockeyMom! We are planning on visiting him in Groton while he's there figuring he will have at least a better chance to spend time with us. Plus I have a sister, her family plus my daughter-in-law (different son) and my only grand baby are in Maine so we can spend time with them as well. We will probably fly into Logan and drive - my husband has never been to New England so it will be fun letting him see how different it is from Tucson! Out here the idea of driving through multiple states in one morning doesn't seem imaginable. I was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as my last duty station before I retired so it will also be nice to see old stomping grounds.
