While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.
**UPDATE 7/29/2021** You now must be fully vaccinated in order to attend PIR:
In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My son flew out the day after PIR. I believe that the only sailors that don't fly out are the ones staying at Great Lakes. However they have to stay near base. Hope this helps.

My son graduates from boot camp at the end of the month. From everything I've read and the letters from my son, they fly out to "A" school early Saturday morning. :( They get time off between "A" school and wherever they get stationed. I think it's a two week break.

I was really disappointed when I found out he only gets between graduation on Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning. I too thought he would get to come home for a little while.
This forum has lots of information. There will be a Facebook page set up too for your son's graduation date. I've found the Facebook page to be a God send. So many sweet and helpful other moms/wives/girlfriends. Lots of support!! -

I only know of break after A school. They usually fly out day after PIR if they are going anyplace other than Great Lakes

Also know that it depends on where he goes after a school as to how long he comes home. My son didn't het to come home after a school. He had to go to FMTB training the next day. Your son should know what's going on and can keep you in the loop. This is a hard time for all but keep your chin up. It does get somewhat easier after basic. My son has been in the Navy for almost a year now. He's graduated from basic training and corpsman "school and fmtb training. Each step gets better on everyone and each step comes with new obstacles. Good luck. And remember this lityle Mavy "motto " hurry up and wait. You will end up living by these words.

Medic Mom... How do they get everything moved to where they are being stationed without time off? Ouch! I was really looking forward to that time after A school. I guess I'll have to start applying that Navy motto. ;)

What do you mean get everything? They have everything they need in their seabag..until they get to their first duty station, they are VERY limited on their space they have. And than when they get to a duty station, they are still limited, it isn't like they are going to have an apt with all the stuff that they need for a house (unless they are married), if they do go and get an apt, when the ship deployes they need to find and pay for storage of all that stuff (why you may ask doesn't the Navy pay for that) 'cause they had a place to live on the ship or in a barracks (depending on that command) so they didn't need all that extra stuff they went and got.

I don't mean get everything right after basic. I meant get his things before he goes to his assigned duty station. By everything, I mean... his car, his motorcycle, personal things, TV, DVD player, small things, not an apartment full of stuff. Things he will want to have while he is "wherever" he goes. He already put everything else into storage, but he does want to have his transportation, some clothes and TV for sure.
It's highly unlikely that he will be stationed on or have to spend any time on a ship. He is doing Air Traffic Controller and more than likely be stationed on land at an air station.

I know my son didn't have much to move. Just clothes and a laptop. I would say just basics til he has a permanent duty station. That's pretty much what we did. He's permanent at Camp Pendelton for now so he's acquiring more stuff. It's hard not seeing him for long lengths of time but we have adjusted. It just makes seeing him even better.

My son was not allowed a break between GL and A school. His PIR was 3/9/12 and he was allowed a day of liberty with us on 3/10 (Saturday). At midnight Saturday night, he was taken to Midway airport with a group of sailors and flew to Pensacola FL at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. We met up with him as the group was checking in and were granted a military pass to go through security and spend time with him before his flight. I gave him his Ipad and cellphone at the airport.

My understanding is unless they are staying at Great Lakes they pretty much leave the next day for their A School. Our daughter is staying at Great Lakes so we are so blessed to get to spend the weekend with her. She does need to be back at base by 10:00 each night but I still get to spend some time with her. In everything I read on this site I have never seen anyone get to go home after PIR and before A School. I hope this helps. Good Luck.
