Can anyone tell me what my SR can expect when he is at boot camp on July 4th?

I'm assuming that there will not be any processing that day. Will the SRs get to see any fireworks? Will they be allowed an extra phone call?

Just curious.

My SR had just entered boot camp just prior to Martin Luther King Day, and there was no processing that day. He was not allowed any extra calls home on that day or President's Day.

I am curious about what you asked too .. Also about Christmas and Thanksgiving etc in the Navy .. I realize not everyone can not have those days off etc but special food and phone calls would be nice :)..anything to make me feel better when they can't be home to celebrate .

I was in boot camp thru 4th of july- 20 years ago, but it was week 7 for us, so it was very laid back and i think we went on some day liberty trip.   my son just got to Great Lakes yesterday, so on the 4th will be almost 3 weeks, I am hoping they let them make their first phone call that day.   Most holiday are just treated as "sunday" schedule, without the church, i think.

Thank you.   I'm trying to be as informed as I can. I am a person that does Much better with answers than the unknown.

Karen P. I don't know what it will be like on the 4th of July but I have to say I was disappointed that I didn't get a call on Mothers Day.  I know they always try to do good by them on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My son was at GL last year on July 4th.   There was no celebration, hotdogs or ice cream.  He could not hear any fireworks.  It was just a regular day....

My son had to go to the recruitment office today to sign a form and his recruiter told him the same thing. This breaks my heart that my SR will not get to enjoy the festivities that my husband, youngest daughter, and I will be enjoying...especially when he and his fellow military men and women are the ones putting their lives on the line for our freedoms.

We have always celebrated July 4th as a family. Guess I need to get use to this as a part of our new normal.

navyknit22, I so love and appreciate your outlook on all of this! Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us!! I had also been wondering about the 4th of July, especially since it is my birthday too. It will have extra meaning this year!!!

I hope that all you moms who have children in boot camp now will be able to attend  your child's PIR. Make every effort to attend. It will be one of the proudest days of your life. The ceremony is so impressive - such an emotional day. It is amazing how much those kids mature during their time at boot camp. My son was much more appreciative and respectful after the experience. Get ready for those tears to flow at PIR when you see that door begin to rise as the new sailors prepare to march in!! Everyone is yelling and cheering - the PIR is such a heartwarming and one-of-a-kind experience. In the meantime, show your support by writing lots of encouraging letters and look forward to celebrating the day when your child has graduated from a recruit to a sailor.

Thanks! I needed to be reminded since I am feeling sad that we will be all together on Fathers day except my son.Am I wierd, I don't even want to have his favorite foods! I am so proud but tonight it just feels sad. I must do what I keep telling him to do...Be Strong and of good courage and before you know it PIR ishere!

kristy, You are so right: PIR will be there before you know it! It is truly a great day too.
