My fiancee is stationed at 32nd Street and I'm currently living in Texas. He and I are planning on getting married the first week of August. Any ideas on nice, safe areas to look for apartments? The times that I've been there the areas directly around base seem kind of sketchy.. He's been in for 4 years and hasn't ever felt the need to get a car, but I'll be bringing one when I move, so commute wouldn't be a huge issue. Being so far away it's hard for me to know what I'm getting into from the pictures, lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the point loma area is nice and its pretty much a straight shot to 32nd, but it will really depend on how much room your wanting and how much your willing to pay

if you end up in mission valley, ive heard its quicker and easier just to take the trolley to work, to avoid traffic

Thanks for the information! Honestly, he's not as worried about the shady-ness aspect as I am.. He's been taking the trolley to get everywhere for a couple of years now, so close to public transportation would be a plus, but as I mentioned, he'd be able to take the car if that didn't work out. I'd much rather be in a safer area and have more of a commute than be worried when he's not around. We'd be looking for a 1 bedroom, maybe even a studio if it had enough storage. For now I'm just trying to figure out which areas to definitely stay away from. Lol

Im relatively new out here still, only been here around 8 months but so far point loma and mission valley seem really nice, we live in point loma and I never feel threatened in anyway, which i was really worried about when we first moved out here.  I personally love the feel of ocean beach but I don't really know much about the area as far as living there is concerned

That's really what I'm concerned with. I've lived in a small town most of my life, and I love visiting SD, but making the change to a bigger area with some iffy places is going to be a process. I don't want to end up in a neighborhood that's shady, especially since I probably won't be able to see the apartment before he signs the lease lol.

Ocean Beach is super fun! One of my best girlfriends lives there and we chill at her place all the time...cool vibe, hippy-ish, great California beach town...there are bums but they are cool for the most part and there are some great restaurants there too (Hodads, South Beach, etc..) The only bad thing is parking, its TOUGH there, I would make sure you have dedicated parking or a garage or driveway....but pretty much most things in walking distance in OB.....Pt Loma is real nice too, good community there too.....my favorite is Coronado, that's where we live, beautiful, super safe, and its only about 10 to 15 mins to 32nd st!

the only thing i dont like about coronado is that horrible bridge lol

LoL I drive over the bridge at least twice daily!!  I work in La Jolla so its a commute...but you get used to it!! I don't even think about it anymore! And it has some beautiful views!!

At least the bridge is free now.  Or did they start the tolls back up again?

LoL Yah, its still free, thank God!  That must've been a pain when there was a toll!

There aren't many bad areas in SD, really....the "bad" areas here are nothing like other big cities (LA, Chicago...)...but I would say stay away from City Heights, Barrio Logan (by 32nd st), East of Downtown can get kinda shady...the three nicest areas are La Jolla, Pt Loma, and Coronado, and they are also the pricey-est....a TON of people live in Murphy Canyon, centrally located...also TONS of people live in the Clairemont/Kearny Mesa area, its also really centrally located.  I have heard good things about Eastlake too, I believe its East of Chula Vista, around that area....there are so many neighborhoods, it really just depends....take Imperial Beach and El Cajon, there are some really nice areas and some not so nice areas, so it varies! Good luck!

I would highly recommend that you to look at getting into base housing.  The cost of living out there is high, many people do not understand how high it really is.

Once you get married he can get on the wait list to get into housing.
