OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

He won't need a drivers license during A school or power school but once they start prototype they have to move off base and he could be stationed in Goosecreek or New York and then he'll have to have a way to get to work. My son will be graduating in July and just bought a car last month. He saved money for several months and had a nice down payment for a car.

I also have a teenage boy who doesn't like to drive. Jo1 is definitly right. I figure by the time he gets to prototype he'll have made the decision to get his license but for now he's fine.

My son didn't get his drivers license until he was in A school. He just went and did it there in Charleston.
No, they don't NEED a drivers license. He'll have to depend on friends for rides, though.

I totally agree with the rest. He won't NEED a driver's license or a vehicle. My sailor bought a vehicle, but in all honesty, it is best if they can save the money. Before my sailor had a vehicle, I did a little research about the bus in Charleston. Not too bad. Also, during the week, my sailor said most places they go are within 2 to 3 miles - an "easy" walk. Maybe your son would appreciate a bike while there. He could bike to a bus stop and then take the bus. Then he doesn't have to depend on others quite as much. However, from what I understand, they do a lot of the buddy system.

Like others have said, he won't need one until Prototype.
In prototype they are required to move off base and provide their own transportation to base for work. While they sometimes put roommates on the same shift, it doesn't always happen. So relying on his roommate for a ride during Prototype wouldn't work if they were working on different crews. And bus wouldn't work because they work 12 hour shifts including 7pm to 7am and 12pm to 12am.
For now, it shouldn't be a worry for him. They aren't even allowed to drive or have a car for at least the first month of A school, so it should be something to figure out in the future, not right now. :)
I'm sure he'll do just fine in Boot camp and you'll be answering other mom's questions here before you know it. :)

If your son goes to Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY, he will need transportation to the site. I do not thinks buses run there. It is not as accessible as in SC. My son was in NY and he had his own car. He rented a house with 2 other sailors and they were on a different schedule than him. Each had their own car.

I was just talking to my son last night about this. He told me to leave a message that it is much easier to get it taken care of before you leave for basic. He emphasised it about three times and said to get on here and let you all know. In addition to having to take the test there it is not convenient. You have to have a friend that will drive you, go with you and let you use their car; they are of course not open on weekends and "it is just a pain"

My son just graduated basic and is in INDOC at Goose Creek. He hates to drive, but informed us that you don't have to drive until prototype school. He said that by the time you graduate power school, you must have a drivers license and $3K saved. I assume that's because they have to move off base. Also, it would be much easier to get a DL before going to Charleston, from what I'm hearing.
PS: I'll be praying for your son. Mine said "the prayers worked, Mom!" :-)

My son also doesn't have his driver's license. Was told he will need it for prototype. As another mom mentioned, it is a pain.. There is only one office open on a Saturday in Charleston - and it's only twice a month. You then have to get someone to drive you there, and then have someone "teach" you, using their car. We thought about a drivers training course - has anyone used one of those in Charleston? He is currently in Power School. I think you have to have your permit for six months before you can apply for your license - with the school schedule, etc. it will be tough for him to fit everything in. Anyone else go through this already? Have any tips?
