Hi Jodi!  I am slowly figuring out my way around this site...  I am from Oregon and my son left July 2nd...  I am starting to make travel plans for 8/31  really glad it is a long weekend!!  I have never been to Chicago. I was surprised at how fast the "box" came he left Mon it came Fri and on Sat was the form letter...  no personal message other than the dear________ was filled in with "my lovely mom"  :)   Somehow its comforting to see other moms of Ship 04/Div 818

Brenda

My son wrote my husband and I a really nice note while he was at the hotel the night before MEPS. (I had read an article on the NavyDep site where the author told the SR's to slip a note into their pockets to their parent or wife so I suggested that he write one-didn't expect it but it was really nice-and tear wrenching-to get it). I received the form letter before the "box" came which was a real nice surprise. We will be driving in on Thursday night from Ohio (6-1/2-7 hr trip), can't wait.

Hello fellow Mom's from ship04/Div818..I got my form letter before my box as well.  No letters or notes :( yet.........I'm hoping they were able to write this past Sunday and maybe we will get a letter this week.  I've sent him 3!  I've made my husband and I reservations at the Ramada Inn, spoke with Sarge about transportation and just booked my airline tickets.  Coming 8/29 and staying till 9/2 - glad it fell on the Holiday as well, will get home (Tampa) and have the holiday to recover from the trip.  I can't wait and have never been to Chicago so it's a doubly wonderful trip, I will get to see my son and have a little vacation. I miss him so very much, but slowly adjusting to his absence.  I'm just confident he will do so very well in the Navy, he's got the right stuff!

Welcome GMom, so glad you came to join the group. I made reservations at the Quality Inn for 8/30 & 31 with the option to add more days if needed.  My son's girlfriend and his best friend are coming too so we needed a bigger room. I was also hoping that they were able to write last Sunday and mail the letter yesterday. I would LOVE to get a letter today. It's my birthday and both of my boys are gone-my oldest is flying to overseas to visit his wife. She has a summer job teaching photography and he's meeting her there to spend a week with her. I think she's coming home about the time our boys PIR. And of course my SR is at bootcamp so it's just the hubby and me to celebrate. Oh well, that's my pity party for the day, lol.

Do you have other kids at home or do you have an "empty nest" too?  The best thing about this empty nest is how much less cleaning and laundry I have to do. However, since I love being a mom I really didn't mind too much-except when I washed clothes I knew weren't worn. His room has stayed clean for 2 weeks and that has to be a record!

Jodi-Josh's Mom

Such parallel lives!  My husband's 50th birthday was yesterday and we had a big weekend celebration and hubby was down because my son wasn't here to help celebrate and that just made it harder for me.  That's my pity party as well.  Happy Birthday, by the way.  Yes, he is our only son, so we are empty nesting.  We have our dog, who is getting the lions share of the attention these past two weeks Sailor

I too got a big room at the Ramada since my father in law is meeting us there and it's more cost effective to share a big room.  It has 3 Queen Beds, I've never seen a room like that!  Should be just fine.

I laughed about your comments about the laundry and clean room.  I have so much more time, my son's hamper was filled up everyday between workout clothes, hang out clothes and going out clothes (even if he wore them for 5 minutes).  We do live in Florida and just stepping outside or walking the dog does make you sweat, but I did laundry everyday.  Now I'm looking for clothes to make a full load.  His bathroom has now gone back to being the guest bathroom (which it was when he was a baby) with "guest towels and knicknacks" and stays relatively untouched and his room is only occupied during the day by our Jack Russel Terrier who lays on his bed waiting for someone to come home.  I am really doing OK about it all, but I'm feeling a little down today and would love to get home and check the mail and see a letter.  I just want to read/hear a little bit about what he's doing and going through.  I miss the connection with him and his daily life.  I'm not all sappy and hysterical and have only really shed any tears when I droppped him off at the recuiters office the day before he shipped so they could take him to the hotel.  I knew it would be my last hug and last "in the car" conversation we would have till????

Well, just wanted you to know... we are on the same page!

My son inherited his brother's pug when he left for an internship years ago and that poor dog looked for him for the first week. He's older (11) so its harder on him than our other dog.

I thought I would be a basket case when he left but, like you, I rarely shed any tears anymore (I did for the first few days if I didn't stay busy but other than that, I've done pretty well). I think once we get that first letter things will start to feel better. I worry that he's regretting his decision even though I know this is what he wanted to do, and I hope in each letter he sounds more positive about his decision. Can't wait until 8/31.

Hi everyone! I'm so excited I found this discussion group! My SR (boyfriend) left 7/2 also. I've received the box & form letter. No letter yet but I'm not sure they've had a chance to write! We're all in this together! As for PIR, I'm looking at flights & I think I'll fly in thursday & fly out Monday. Does anyone else's SR have A school in Great Lakes? I heard they'll begin school the monday after PIR - is this true?

My son was told by his recruiter he would be going to A school in Pensacola (being from Tampa) we are happy about that but that hasn't been totally confirmed.  Will know more when the letters start coming!

Hi, Navy GF, so glad you found us. What is your boyfriend's rate? My son is under contract for Rescue Swimmer. I'm pretty sure that the rescue swimmers go to Pensacola after bootcamp. If I remember correctly, rescue swimmers actually go to "C" school first before "A" school, which, I think, is opposite of everyone else. At least that is what I've been told on the Rescue Swimmer website. Any moms who have SR's heading for Rescue Swimmer schooling in Pensacola, head over to that site. The ladies on there are fantastic. They will answer all your questions and they really know alot.

I got all my reservations made today...  staying Thurs-Monday mainly because no one seems to know exactly how much time we have with them....  So which is C school  and which is A school?  seems like they have a bunch of different trainings of different lengths of time..  My son is Air Rescue Swimmer.  So is there a different web-site for that besides the group here?  I am just relieved to have the airline tickets and room and car all set.. and I actually didn't go broke doing it all  lol  :)

Good Morning, Brenda. There is a group on N4M just for rescue swimmers. If you click on groups above and put Moms of Aviation Rescue Swimmers in the search section, they are the first group that pops up. Go there, Lydia and the other moms on the site are wonderful. They will answer any question you have about the program. When you first get on that group, there is a discussion called "Path of a Rescue Swimmer". Read that, it explains what the program is and what your son will be doing.

Sounds like we are getting everything in place to have an enjoyable PIR. Hopefully, more moms and girlfriends will start showing up on this site. We want to have a big group to yell for our sailors when they come through the door at graduation.

I made my reservations! Aug 30th through Sept 4th. My boyfriend's is Navy Diver. I read they'll stay in GL for A school do they'll check in Friday & "fingers crossed" have day liberty on the weekend. Hopefully we'll receive a letter soon!
