So, I've never gotten a phone call from my sailor during his deployment. I honestly don't expect to either, however regarding my last discuss post, I sent him a long email explaining my feelings and I asked if he'd call me when he got a chance because it would be so much easier to hear his voice then an email. Even if he decides to break it off with me LOL
ANYWAY - what would a phone call from a ship look like on the caller ID? I sometimes get really random phone calls from random area codes (like earlier today it was (XXX) XXX-8370, the X's being numbers of course, and when I googled it, it wasn't a company or anything). Will a phone call from the ship look like that, a regular phone number? Or will it be a random string of numbers like some foreign numbers are? Just so I can possibly be prepared.
Thanks, y'all!

I was wondering if they could only call in port on a ship! Thanks for this info :-)
My husband is on a carrier and anytime he calls me its unknown. thats all I have ever heard of, unless they are getting to use a phone in their shop which in that case I think it will have an actual number. Typically you wont get calls from actual numbers unless its an emergency. (This is based on my husbands ship) While some people do use the office phones I know its not really allowed on his ship unless they have special permission. But I would say just go ahead and answer anything. You can always just hang up. Every woman that I know from my husbands ship always talks about when "unknown" pops up on their phone. In ports it possibly comes from another number if they buy a phone in port.
Yeah, that's a good idea. I think at the point I'll just answer anything and if it's some random thing I'll hang out. I get so many telemarketers and stuff calling, I never answer unknown calls. I think I will start doing that now!
90% of the wives I know always say their calls always come from an unknown. The only ones that are from other numbers are either out in port, they got the access code for an emergency, or they are using the code when they arent supposed to. Idk if all ships are like this but on my husbands you can get in trouble. I put my name on the national do not call registery so that cut down on the crazy calls a little. You can google it and get on that. and now if a company calls me I tell them one time to put a note on my name to never call me again or they will hear from one pissed off navy wife. I had a company calling me about my diabetes... which I dont have. Needless to say after the 5th time someone got an earful and they havent called since haha!! But if he is on a carrier or surface fleet they can call if they arent in port as long as their communications are up and they have a calling card. They can typically call in ports as well from the ship. My husband's last port the phones were messed up for some reason but otherwise they usually can. Also, my husband's friend this deployment bought a phone that worked in bahrain and dubai and ports in that area.
Well, he's on the USS New York and I know he's called his parents several times...pretty sure they weren't always in port for them either. I don't know. We are going through a really rough patch and I think talking over the phone, even for just a few minutes, would help tremendously. Who knows. I'm just grasping at straws right now and trying so hard to just not think about it, especially because I know they are in the roughest bout right now. They haven't been in port in nearly 2 months, I can tell hes tired all the time, irritated, I'm trying hard not to cause added stress, but it's just tough. So if he does decide to call, I'd hate to miss it. That would be the worst!
Yea I know what you mean :( I hope he calls you hun! Wow yea thats how my husbands ship was they didnt port for such a long time! Hopefully they port soon!! Yea I feel ya I felt bad when my husband got the news of the extension, because they were told there was no way they were extending again then four days later there was another extension! It was so hard on the crew and pretty much from the time they were supposed to be home (the first date) until now its been realy bad. Yea I would say just start answering everything then just take any frustration out on telemarketers lol then hang up on em ;)
Oh and I'm on the no call list, but I still get random calls. It's so obnoxious. Maybe I just need to tell them off like you did! haha
Some of the ships have pay satellite phones, so there are situations when they can call from at sea.
The office phones were called autovan when I worked on them, and yes, they are supposed to have a code to make a call. Some of the autovan work in port only, some do work out to sea when hooked onto the satcomm systems. There are a few which have unlimited access, and those are usually in officer's offices, and no personal calls are allowed without specific permission.
These aren't secure phones, we were working on one line (in Japan) and we heard a guy talking to his GF in the Philippines..... wow. I wanted to hook up my handset and give the guy an earful, he was talking about how he couldn't divorce his wife just yet, and how he didn't have the money to bring the GF up for a visit, but he'd see her when his ship came into port.... cheating bastard. You can bet he was on a phone without permission... and it goes to show you never know who is listening in.
Usually its an unknown number in less they are in port and then they can rent phones and get cards to call back home and then its usually a weird looking number, when my husband is gone I answer anything and if its not him I just hang up lol
When my bf calls it is a regular phone number. You should expect phone calls especially if his ship has the ability to call. They have sign up lists. I get a call from mine at least twice a week. The ship phone number usually has an area code of the place it is stationed out of. Make sure to answer those calls, it is probably him.
haha thats weird! My husbands ships is the complete opposite. Always unknown and they dont do sign up list. Its up to the sailors to buy cards if they have them on the ship. Minutes are really expensive like 50 cents a minute and they can call when they are off work or they are on a break. Its weird how different ships have varying policies. lol learn something new everyday!
