OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hi all!

Just got off the phone with personal property and fleet and family services. I thought I would share in case anyone has a similar situation!

My husband's A school has a variable of 4-6+ months. He will be going to Pensacola (AV). I am working on planning moving myself to Pensacola. I was really stressing thinking that I would have to sell off all my stuff b/c I couldn't afford to move it. Today I learned that b/c his orders will be unaccompanied the Navy will pay for us to have our stuff moved from our original address in CA even if I officially move to Pensacola. This is wonderful news for me b/c I can leave my stuff where it's at and just take clothes and such down to Pensacola (hopefully will find someplace furnished) then when we get our pcs we can have our furniture moved from CA. Whew! This is great news to me, hopefully helps someone else too who may be thinking about moving on unaccompanied orders!

Good news!  They told you about having someone there with a POA who can sign for the move, and so on?  Will you be putting it all in storage, or do you need to train a family member how to do a packout?

The original address is his "Home of Record", yes?   That's the detail which saves you the cost of moving your stuff.   Of course, you can't acquire anything in P-cola you want moved, which can suck.  I imagine there are decent furnished places.  There's an old discussion on that in the PCS forums.  Gal moved, got a place full of new furniture, and her stuff back home couldn't be moved.

Still, every spouse should check beforehand to make sure it all lines up for them.  So glad you shared your experience!

No I wasn't told about the POA. I just assumed I would fly or drive back and handle it? Since I will need to do more organizing and packing then anyhow. Our stuff is going to be staying right where it is (at the home of record) since we are renting from family here it is ok :) And yes, the only things I was planning to bring to Pensacola were basic necessities and I will be looking to stay someplace furnished! 

You could fly back and handle it, or you can give a trusted family member a move-specific POA.

Right now is when you need to prep for that move ... I know it is months away, but trust me, the more you do now, the happier you will be later.  Packers pack everything under their noses, even full trashcans.  NOTHING which is not to go to CA can be where the packers can get at it.  I  know a lady whose purse was packed out.   Go through your things, start tossing magazines, old papers,  and old clothes, and anything which would be replaced.  Don't pack things, but get them super-organized.   While you're at it, get a small folding file and start setting aside all important information to handcarry with you.  Take photos of everything you own whether you supervise the move or not.  This is one thing I do well, having done it my entire life.

You'll be fine.  Navy moves never killed anyone.  Made them crazy, cry and scream, but then you'll have interesting experiences.  Hehe.

So I was thinking about this and figured that I should have everything ready to go (like you said) and have someone that can sign for the move if I can't make it down. How does the POA thing work? Thank you so much for all your help!

You pick who will be there when the packers arrive, who can sign that everything was packed while they watch and verify the inventory list.  This person should be familiar with the Navy move advice, so  pick someone trustworthy who is willing to read.  Someone who will be there for sure, rescheduling is a real pain.

A power of attorney is easy to get, you can print off the forms online.  There are limited and unlimited ones, you will want one which limits what the person can do for you (otherwise they legally are you... and that can be bad).  PPO may have a preferred form, so call and ask them if they have a Power of Attorney form they suggest.  If not, just google free legal forms for your state.
