OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Navy Reserves (FTS) vs Active Duty designation on Contract

Okay, I have been reseaching like crazy for my son before he joins so that he makes sure he is armed with knowledge and information when he goes to MEPS. What I want to know is, in his contract, does it make a difference whether it says joining the Naval Reserve for a 4 yr active , 2 yr reserve, and then 2 yr IRR? The recruiter said it doesn't matter as he will still have 4yrs active time and it means he gets paid out of a different pot. and he tried to sell it that it was better for promotion opportunities. I think it DOES matter and the recruiter is telling us incorrect or at least "Rosie" information. Plus to me the 2 yr. Reserve time means to me he will have to do drill time . I was in Marines and Air Guard, so I am not lacking in first hand info plus I am a bit skeptical. Does anyone know what is up with this? Also the recruiter showed me a sample contract so I know what the new ones will look like. Help!

My SR went in as FTS (PIR 09/07). I do not know a lot about it and have been trying to gather as much information as possible.

What I know:

Same as active paid out of different pot.

Same benefits.

Easier promotions due to the fact that they go up against other reservists, not AD.

Can stay on reserve bases as well.

Easier to stay stateside.

Use them to instruct other reservists in their jobs.

 

What I don't know:

What is IRR?

Is it hard if they want to re enlist as AD?

What does it mean if they want a Navy career?

AND probably a lot more that I don't know to ask!!

 

When you find out any other info, I would sure like it if you pass it on to me. I will friend request you.

Also, at MEPS most of the people that worked there stated they were FTS, as well. At least Navy side. They sang a lot of praise. But all I'm getting is the "good side". So I don't know the "down side".

The recruiter also told me the same thing. Easier to get promotions blah blah blah. In fact exactly the same as what they said to you. iRR means inactive ready reserve. It means you are done with active time and reserve drill time , but the navy could still call you back to active duty if needed. I don't want son training others I want him being trained! Also, I hear it is hard to go from reserve to active status even upon reenlistment. This was true yrs ago too when I was in USMC bootcamp, there was a navy gal who switched to marines because she couldn't go active in navy. I don't know. I wonder if they are so overmanned now that they are making everyone reserves.

I was told recently they were doing away with FTS program. What then? I can't find that out. I think you're right about being overmanned, not to mention budget cuts, which may be why they need to get payed from a different pot. Quite honestly, I didn't know she wasn't AD until 2nd trip to MEPS (right before BC) and I had a fit! I thought I was told it said reserve on there because she was still in HS, and a DEP. That it would change once it came time for her to leave...I thought I was doing so well with being informed. Up until 16July...

What happened when you had a fit? How did they respond? did you go to MEPS with her? The recruiter said you can, you just have to wait outside, but that before signing contract (first visit, not one right before BC) then your recruit can confer with you. I swear, why can't they just be upfront? People are still going to sign up.

(2nd time at MEPS, when she left for BC)That's when everyone came to me and told me all of the "rosie" stuff. My SR conferred with me and that's when I asked about the reserve, and they told me her status would change when she went in (first time at MEPS). At least, this is what I thought. My SR seemed to act like she knew...whatever she wants to do. I was just trying to look out for her welfare as she is only 17.

Well I am sure it will turn out. At least she does get to do 4 active. I wouldn't be so concerned as the son only thinks he wants to do 4 yrs, but I want him to have the option of re-upping.

Same here, though. I want her to have that option, as well.

So we went in to the recruiter's office again. ASVAB on Thursday and MEPS and job selection on Friday. I am nervous! I know he will do fine on test, it's just that now it is more real and I will miss him. I should have scheduled the MEPS for next week so he could think about jobs over the weekend. And the recruiter still said FTS is a good way to go. The recruiter also said if we wanted we could see contract at MEPS.

Well that's awesome! Obviously, being a Marine, you know to make sure he goes through the jobs online beforehand (hopefully with you) and makes a list of several different jobs he thinks will be interesting. That way he sort of has an idea about them when he talks to the job counselor. Yep, sounds more real. Keep me posted!

We are pretty psyched!  Now I want to make sure the recruiter puts the right code for active duty on his enlistment form when he goes to MEPS.  I think it is "DNR"  .   Do you know where I can find out this information?
