To the best of my knowledge, my son will be the only SR leaving from Niagara Falls MEPS this coming Monday. He asked the Chief at his last DEP meeting today what I needed to get on base for his swearing in. The just told me driver's license, registration and proof of ins. I wasn't told anything further regarding where to go or what to do. I didn't ask about the airport because I didn't know anything about that being a possibility until today. My son has never flown before either. I am feeling quite like a fish out of water with all this as I like to know exactly what I am doing. Any thoughts about what to expect or plan for on Monday would be much appreciated.
To add to my stress...Monday is our 4H day at the county fair. My oldest daughter is showing her horse and another daughter has commitments in the 4H youth development building. trying to figure out the logistics of all this is overwhelming. It is all coming at one time.
Thanks for your help...
Jen

The swearing in should be done at MEPS, do you know where that is or have you been there before? Ours is in an office building downtown and he is right all you need is a drivers licence to get in. Your son will probably have to be there early in the morning his recruiter will probably drive him, I think they do a drug test and some last minute paperwork things. Then there is the swearing in. A short simple ceremony but they are very nice and let you move around and take pictures durring it. After the swearing in they will eventually be taken to the airport to leave for Great Lakes. some moms have talked about being able to hang out at the airport with their son others have not been able to. Do you have any idea which airport he will leave out of?
Depending on where the MEPS/airport is in relation to you will probably determine how much you are able to participate.
Hi...thanks...
I am to drop him at the recruiting office Sunday afternoon. MEPS is NFAFB. He will be staying the night in a hotel. His recruiter will taking him from the office to MEPS. I used to work up near there so I know where I am going. I am gonna talk to his recruiter when I drop him on Sunday just to make sure i have all the info correct because i am getting it from him.
I am guessing that he will leave from Buffalo International Airport, but there is also a small NF Airport. Idk if they use that one at all.
hmmm I don't know but the recruiter should, I would also ask if they know what airlines he is flying and to which Chicago airport. I googled the buffalo airport and looked at the terminal map and it is small too just 26 gates so he/you should have no problems there. If you know what airport he is flying into you can google that and look at terminal maps. Midway is much smaller than o'hare but I think they go into o'hare and it is big. But he can always as someone how to get to wherever he has to go.
My son doesn't leave till Oct so I don't know how much instruction they give them about the airports.
You are smart to get started on this early. I joined N4M in January, but I have had so many other things to deal with in the last 8 months that I am now taking a "crash course" in all things Navy BC.
I am sure I will still feel unprepared when it is my turn to say goodbye to my son :)
Is he your oldest? I also have 4 children.
2nd oldest but only son. my oldest daughter is married and lives in Alaska so I will still have 2 at home. Where does your boy fit in?
ok so a quick google search and it looks like your closest MEPS is in Buffalo. Your son has probably been there before, so ask him if it is on a base. If it is once you stop at the gate and show your id/reg/POI just tell them you are there for a swearing in and ask them where to go.
Hopefully you will be able to get someone to help you with the 4H things.
