OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

My son called me on August 15 to let me know that the doctor diagnosed him with depression. Ok that's cool, I want to know why does it take so long for them to discharge him. I need him home so that we can get to the bottom of this. I feel so bad for him because he really wants to be there. He is quiet young man who loves to play xbox. All I am begging for is that they send my child home!!!

Unfortunately, it takes a couple of weeks due to paperwork and everyone that they have to talk to before they leave. My son was moved to Ship 5 on 10 Aug and will see the Dr. tomorrow to see if he is fit for travel. He had stress fractures in both tibias, he was not fit for travel last week, they kept him another week because he needs to heal. He said they talk with legal, social worker, etc... They try not to keep the recruits their to long once they are separating because they have to continue paying them while they are still there. My son says there are 160 male recruits. He does get to call home daily if he signs up on the list. Its another waiting process but hopefully your son will be home soon. I sent my son a book to read while in there.

Thanks..I just spoke to him. He is sick with a cold now!! He hasn't been to legal yet, what a process....Can you send me the address so that I can write him. He said he would like to stay, but I told him with what they diganosed him with, he will not be able to. Depending on his discharge code he can return in 6 months. So I hope they are able to give him a second chance. I feel so bad for him...(crying). It felt good to talk to him though....

If he seperates while in bootcamp, they tell them they can try again in 6 months. What they don't tell them, is that he needs to start the whole process over again and now needs two extra waviers (on top of what ever he had to get to join the first time) he will need a waiver for being seperated from bootcamp, and another for depression. Plus if he takes any meds for depression he has to be off them for 1-2 years.
Sorry to say the odds of him ever joining after he is seperated in bootcamp are slim (less than 1%).... If he wants to stay, he needs to fight while he is still there! Though it could be 6 + months of him being there in Ship 5

It's a harder process getting back in once they separate. Our recruiter told us for my son to try and get recommendations letters from his RDCs, since he had completed everything except passing his run and since he didn't get to do battle stations. Academically, he passed. The recruiter said its not 100% guarantee, but a recommendation letter may help to show the character of the recruit. Best of luck to you and your son. It's always worth trying. Just continue to encourage your son until he is home with you. -

I really appreciate the address and the kind words. Its a hard battle because this is something he wants to do. I will continue to support him in his decision. God makes all things happen so with that said I will leave it in his hands.

legally RDC's are not allowed to give recommendation letters for anyone or anything.
That recruiter sounds like he is blowing smoke up your.....he knows the RDC's can't write letters of recommendations for recruits.

I'm not sure what the process is to fight the decision for him separating. The only thing I can tell you is be sure to have your son sign the forms which allows you to talk to legal and medical regarding his status. Once he signs them then you can talk to legal. My son made the decision to separate after being in the medical holding ship, so I never spoke to legal regarding him fighting to stay, since he wanted to separate

If he already signed the paper work stating he doesn't want an appeal than he can't fight to stay. If he wants to appeal he has to do it while he is there, it is his fight that he has to do, and when he goes to legal he is asked there if he wants to appeal the case.

He will be home on Friday, Aug 31. I am sure they didnt want to pay him another two weeks so they made it happen. LOL... I am so glad he had the temporary experience with the military. I still say things happen for a reason. I wish everyone the best with their future sailors.....

I hope your son has seen legal already and they've started the processing for him. My son called me on Aug 8th to say they diagnosed him with asthma and they're sending him home. Supposedly, they see legal in 3-5 days after moving to SEPS. But my son didn't get to talk to legal until last Wed (8/22)! It's really hard being here with them there, knowing they're sad and disappointed and there's nothing we can do for them. BUT... I'm extremely happy to say he's coming home today!! Hang in there Mom. Your young man will be home soon :)
