If it's within the 300 mile radius he can request leave. My husband was there for Thanksgiving last year and they did not allow any duty section swaps or anything like that, so if he has duty he may be denied. Otherwise he should be set! When he gets there & it gets closer to the holiday they will be briefed on all the policies and procedures. And since it's so close he can go home other weekends as well (like Veteran's Day, which is a 3 day weekend).
As long as he's not requesting days off that he should be working I don't think it counts against his leave balance. -

My hubby is in Great Lakes A School right now. I've become very familiar with the liberty policy. We also live close and I drive in every weekend to see him. Here is how the Phases break down:
Phase 1 - wear uniform at all times, have to have 2 liberty buddies, have 10pm curfew, 50 mile radius (I think there are a few more, but those are the main ones)
Phase 2 - midnight curfew, civilian clothes are ok, only have to have 1 liberty buddy, still have 50 mile radius. They pretty much get to pick when they get to Phase 2, there is a list of things you have to do and when you are done with them, you take an oral test on military history and if you pass, you're Phase 2. The soonest you can hit Phase 2 is about the 12th day because there are limits to how many things you can do a day on the list. My husband maxed them out every day and was Phase 2 on the 12th day. He really wanted to be able to come home.
Phase 3 - 300 mile radius, still need 1 liberty buddy, can stay out overnight.
My husband put in a chit (which is a special request to deviate from the rules) for me to be his liberty buddy. I have been signing him out/being his liberty buddy since he was on Phase 1 with no problems. Not sure what the likelihood is if you're not married, chits are up to the three people above him in the chain of command. It's kind of a judgement call/if they are in a good mood kind of thing. My husband was also able to get a chit approved to stay overnight (our home only) while he was on Phase 2. We live about 75 miles from GL. He had talked to the 2nd Class Petty Officer above him and asked what he needed to do. She was really reasonable, told him what she wanted to see and when he had done them, he brought her a chit and she approved it. You can add me if you want. Bootcamp is hard for the soon to be Sailors and their loved ones.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, on the days they have duty, they are not allowed to leave their "ship" which is what they call the barracks. They can leave to go to chow and if they get special permission, they can go out to PT (physical training). My husband's ship has a rotation of duty so that each one has duty every 4 days, not sure if all the ships are the same, but I would imagine they are really similar. They can earn duty days off for various things. My hubby is hoping to use his on Saturday duty days so he can have the whole weekend off.

Also each ship has their own rules and some are stricter than others... Their chits have to be approved through their ship. My husband was my fiancé when he was in A school in Great Lakes & got denied leave one weekend while his friend on another ship didn't. They were going to visit his friend's parents together so they had the exact same details.... And I was allowed to be my husband's liberty buddy when I went to visit. So again, it just depends on which ship and chain of command he has! Also if he gets denied he should talk to them because sometimes they'll approve it after he talks to them!

During the Christmas holiday, all the schools go into stand down and the student sailors are urged to take leave for up to two weeks. Not all of them have earned their leave days, so they must borrow forward. The big question is how much leave your sailor will have earned, and does he want to use it on Thanksgiving and be short for Christmas (or later, when he needs to travel to see you?). Leave days are not unlimited, they must be budgeted.
If he can do Thanksgiving on liberty (regular time off) rather than leave days (earned paid vacation days), that would be a lot better. You can do the math, they earn 2.5 days of leave each month.

Great. Thank you guy so much. I'm Glad he will be in GL for thanksgiving cause it sounds like we may be able to work something out. Or at least maybe I could go see him. I'm glad im only about 30 mins away from GL.
Can someone explain a little further on the "liberty buddy" thing? Him and I have never heard of that. -

The liberty buddies have to stay together at all times when they leave base. You have to have one to leave base. They are supposed to look out for each other and keep each other from doing something stupid. A couple weeks ago, a new guy in my husband's ship got an ARI (alcohol related incident) for underage drinking. His liberty buddy also got in trouble, although Ido not know what their punishments were, Ihope the buddy got a lessor punishment. The Navy takes that stuff super seriously. Half a floor, 36 people are going to Captain's Mast (really big trouble) for hazing and only a few were doing the hazing. The rest just didn't report it, so they also risk the same punishment as the perpetrators. Everyone is expected to look out for everyone there.

My fiancee was supose to leave on monday but now they changed it to sunday i'm so nervouse I don't really have any friends to keep me company while he is away thas is going to be a long 8 weeks does the leave days start to add up during basic or after he graduates
